I've been considering one of these for quite a while, but haven't decided if it is worth it. I read a lot - that isn't the issue. I just don't know if there's enough books that I would like to make it worth having. (Most often, the books I've seen listed for it are "Fiction and Literature," which is a fine genre, but not one I browse very often.)
I held off for a while because I read about a lot of technical issues with the first Kindle. Now there is a new version, which seems to be less buggy.
Does anyone have one (or know someone who has one)? If so, what do you (they) think of it.

I was wondering the same thing. Being able to carry hundreds of books with you would be great. However, I tried an Amazon search, and none of the books I like are on it.
Try a search of as many books you'd be interested in as you can think of. If you don't get many, you may want to wait. Just my view.

I'd wait a few years for the price to come down to something reasonable. That's what I'm going to do.

I'd never heard of them before, one of the disadvantages of being in Australia. Now, after happily trawling through the web for a bit, I want one, especially the Kindle 2. So spare a thought for us poor buggers who don't even have a choice.

Among other things, I'm unhappy with the whole black-text-on-white-background thing. I'm a bit of a white-on-black fanatic, because I often spend enough time at the computer to get eyestrain. If Kindles had all the books I wanted, AND didn't feel like staring directly into a fluorescent light, I'd buy two.

Although the device itself is fine (I friend of mine has one) I don't like how they try to lock you into buy^H^H^H licensing all your books from Amazon. And of course the books you buy^H^H^H license are encrypted and can't be used on any other device. The only reason I would consider getting one, is like xkcd said, for the free internet access. The screen is interesting, for anyone who doesn't know, it uses that fancy digital paper tech. It should be more comfortable to look at, but on the other hand it redraws slowly, and you need good lighting to use it.
