My uncle is a typical ultra conservative, gun owning, hardcore catholic. My state (Connecticut) approved gay marriage a few months ago and he want ballistic.

...did he shoot up the place? No, but he went hunting that weekend. Honestly, he's such a hot headed guy without even counting the religious and political views. It's scary to think about what he could do sometimes. Every time I see some Rapture Ready idiot talk about shooting up unbelievers, it makes me wonder if that thought has ever crossed his mind.

Being an ex-Roman Catholic I can tell you that the numbers do not surprise me. A large number of Catholics look at the Pope and the Vatican like that crazy uncle you have, that one that you love very much but understand he is very out of touch with reality.

This fits my experience. I don't know one single Catholic who follows what the Pope says. lol

Neither do I, and I know plenty of Catholics. Maybe the distant cousin that's a priest, but I'm not sure of that and I don't really know him.

Most Catholics did, it seems, by a margin of about seven percent (52-45). This despite (apparently) a stronger push from Catholic leadership regarding not supporting a pro-choice candidate. Gleaned from this article: www.nytimes.com/2008/11/08/us/politics/08beliefs.html

I don't know which is funnier, the fact that the Vatican is so horribly out of touch with the majority of Catholics, or the nonsensical rants from the ladies at Bible study about "cafeteria Catholics."
And by funny, I mean sad.
