The words of others have only what power those that hear them give them. Cursing offends only those who choose to find the words offensive. And frankly, I couldn't care less if some random person across the street from me finds what I'm saying offensive. They don't like it, they can walk away. Fair enough. But if one takes that position, it kind of removes your ability to criticize the Dr. Lauras and WBCs of the world for using offensive slurs. After all, they are just words. They don't have power of their own. I don't like the signs with cursing on them. You're out in public, there might be families present, it just seems uncouth. Think of the children! More like: be polite. would, for example, this sign: really have been better if it said the word "fuck"? Or this sign: Would its point be any different if it said "screwing"? It is generally considered a dick move to be loudly swearing in a public place. Why is it any less rude to have it written in big letters on a sign? Is it really going to help your cause at all? Protests and rallies are meant to serve a purpose and having cussing on your signs is just going to serve to turn a whole lot of people off while preaching away to the choir.

1) Profanity draw attention fast, kind of what is desired with a protest sign.
2) The intent behind the word is what matters. The "fucking" example given is not an attack on anybody, not like using a racial slur. But, you don't have to use a slur to be hateful, and it's the hate that is the problem, much moreso than the word. Calling somebody, for example, 'a wretched human being' is worse than the 'fucking for virginity' sign, despite the former not using any profanity.

What Vene said, pretty much. The intent behind the words is that is offensive, not the words themselves. I've called a black man a nigger to his face and he didn't care, because he knew there was no malice behind the word. Not that that's a particularly smart example to follow unless you're very familiar with said person and know they'd have no issue with it.
