Huh, its like the one board I don't visit on a regular basis...
Anyway, I'm trying my hand at making a (simplistic) java video game (the trial run was an Axis and Allies java game, which is a WIP but getting there rather quickly), and I was hoping for any advice beyond the obvious 'keep going no matter the difficulties.'
Its a fighting game (hopefully), so it shouldn't be too difficult, but I know perfectly well how quickly things go from 'oh its easy' to 'holy shit' in computer programming. So far the biggest hurdle, surprisingly, is sprite art. I can't draw. At all. Right now its not an issue, because I'm using placeholders lifted from Jump Ultimate Stars, but seeing as I don't want to get sued, I'm going to have to come up with something.
I already have the 'Developing Games in Java' book, so that's taken care of. Screen works, double buffering works (supposed to be easy in java, took me a day to figure out why it wasn't working), animations work, and I'm testing keyboard input tomorrow. So yeah, I have a long way to go (although, it shouldn't be too much when I think about it, I already have the architecture of the sprite packages in mind as well as the folder system, which should work because I'm using the same system for AnA.
Got the inspiration from MineCraft. It was basically 'hey, he did it in java. I know some java. I could do something like it.'
Comments/encouragement/advice?

As far as art goes, you might search the web for boards where artists tend to hang out. You can probably find a computer graphics person and commission some sprites for free or for very cheap, if you're clever and persistent. Even DeviantArt can be good. Of course, you usually get what you pay for, but it's not like they have to be flashy.
Alternately, we have a few artists here (although perhaps of the wrong sort), but maybe they can help you out or know somebody else who can.
