Hey all, maybe someone can explain to me what just happened.. I opened IE 8 just like usual but it lagged a few moments and then I got one of those weird windows Alert messages. It only allowed me to hit the Ok button to get through them and I couldn't force-close the page with ctrl+w. The messages were freaky.
"Hi" "*something*" And then a string of about 7 numbers that I didn't really recognize followed by 2 more.
I have no idea what virus would cause this, how I could have gotten it, or why it's chosen now to strike - I'm running a virus scan now but i'm freaked out

I don't know specifically what that was, but IE is fairly notorious for having gaping security holes. Could be connected.

If you can get the actual message I may be able to give a guess, otherwise I'd recommend checking out this tool: www.malwarebytes.org/I've used it a half dozen times on people's machines and it almost always works. If it doesn't, then you're really fucked, but if it doesn't I may be able to get you to the point where it does. Just make sure it's updated. While I'm not going to start the same fight up all over again, these days it's more likely to get hit by your own stupidity than something simply slipping through I7 or higher. You have to click to do damn near everything, but it pretty well works.

Malwarebytes and if malwarebytes can't get the job done I go to my last resort which has not personally failed me yet which is a tool called ComboFix - www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/combofix It usually even finds shit malwarebytes didn't pick up in its' scan. But I always keep it as a last resort since Malwarebytes usually gets the job done.

My last resort is to destroy my computer with a progressively smaller series of hammers.

-laughs- well, whatever it was, that was the only symptom I saw and it hasn't acted up yet. I gotta say I'm kinda glad it struck when it did though, that wouldn't have been a fun thing to get at 3 am with most of the lights off, alone. I do use IE8 and I have firefox but it doesn't have my favs saved to it so I mostly use it for websites that IE can't seem to run.. like parts of Quia and stuff.

I might be wrong, but I suspect that Firefox will let you import your favorites from IE. Chrome does, so I'd be surprised if Firefox did not.

Meh, what can I say. Error messages can say (not to mention do) some pretty strange things.

Firefox can let you import your favs. You just have to find the right process.

In Firefox: File > Import > From Microsoft Internet Explorer > Ensure "Favourites" is checked > OK. Et voila, Internet Explorer's favourites are now on Firefox.

Sounds more like the website you use as your IE homepage was compromised in some way. (Any web page can use JavaScript to pop up a message, and the browser will not respond to anything till the message-box has been dismissed. And if the JS is coded to immediately pop up another message (and then another, etc), you get a series of pop up messages and no apparent way of getting rid of them. It's annoying but mostly harmless.)
If IE is behaving itself now, presumably the site has been fixed.

I once got an error message that told me I was adopted.
