Heres some more interesting news for you: www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/31/mahmoud-abdel-salam-omar-arrested_n_868886.htmlDamn, maids aren't doing so well this month. *Edit: to make clear of the language title of thread, I am not insinuating that one should not be arrested for raping a hotel maid, nor that said charge is disingenuous. The dots are there to highlight that this happened (reported) twice in a small time period, in two separate incidents.

I must be behind as a banker. I've never completed a rape in my life. No wonder I'm still languishing at the bottom!
But I don't think its just recently that powerful men have been committing sexual violence. Anyone looking into DSK's own history could see how such behaviour was almost expected of powerful men. Just that women are (hopefully) more empowered to speak out about the violence.

They should be giving pepper spray or something to these maids, apparently they need some sort of protection from these bankers.

One might be stupid and think "Well, isn't that a coincidence, all of these maids are suddenly the targets of rape? Suspicious."
Or one could be smart and realize that just because you don't see something doesn't mean it isn't happening, and that these rapes have likely been going on for longer and just been unreported due to the stigma against being raped.

This, combined with recent events, show that economists are the rape-iest profession out there.

they need some sort of protection from these bankers. Everyone does. Without serious reregulation (which won't hapen) banking culture will be that they, as ubermensch, can and should get away with everything. Whether it be rape or plain old theft.

That is what my money is on. it is similar to the notion of the Arab spring. All the abuses have been happening and going unreported until the people see one person standing up. It gives them the courage to stand up as well. Given the vulnerability of people in a service industry job like a maid, I would expect there to be many many more cases of sexual harassment from guests.
