A former Oshkosh businessman and Republican donor hopes to force Democrat Jessica King into a primary election to buy incumbent Republican Sen. Randy Hopper more time to campaign in his summer recall election.
Wisconsin Republican Party 6th Congressional District Chairman Dan Feyen sent letters to Republicans in the Oshkosh region urging them to support Republican "protest candidate" John Buckstaff, who intends to run as a Democrat so Hopper, R-Fond du Lac, can finish the legislative session in Madison and have time to campaign.
A similar call for support for Wautoma resident Rol Church was sent to Republicans in the 14th Senate district, represented by Sen. Luther Olsen, R-Ripon, who is being challenged by, state Rep. Fred Clark, D-Baraboo.
Both efforts need to gather 400 nominating signatures by June 13 in order to be added to the ballot and force primary elections.
Buckstaff, who lives in the town of Vinland and is not a resident of the 18th Senate District, has contributed to Gov. Scott Walker, Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen and Hopper, whom he would face should he force a primary and defeat challenger Democrat Jessica King.
In a statement e-mailed to the Northwestern Monday afternoon, Buckstaff was unapologetic about his potential run as a spoiler candidate.
"After watching the protest in Madison led by the unions and Democratic Party I have decided to run as a protest candidate against Jessica King in the Democratic primary. I make no apologies for this action as I view the recall of Senator Hopper as wrong," Buckstaff wrote. "Hopefully everyone will see this as another example of what democracy looks like. … Liberals aren't the only ones with a right to protest and I want to bring people's attention to what is happening to a person (Hopper) who did the job we elected him to do while others fled the state."
