Sort of tangential, but that commercial reminds me of a more tame version of those Comcast commercials that explicitly call out Qwest and its supposed practice of pawning people off on local companies that suck. Or something. Advertising seems to have taken a bit more of a turn for the brutal lately.

Like one of the comments on the article itself said, what about the Mac/PC commercials? Was Apple sued by Microsoft?
That said, I wouldn't trust a salesperson to educate me about anything; I'd much rather consult my brothers (the computer graphics and programming wizards) and my dad on what to put in a build/which cheap templated computer to get.

Microsoft even had their own "I'm a PC" ads. Coke and Pepsi have tken hots at each other, and a couple of the pizza chains, etc. This is pretty mild.

Sounds like the ad hit a little too close to Best Buy. They'll be filing for Chapter 11 in a couple of years because they're more interested in legal cockwaving than competing.

What gets me is that Best Buy is acting like no other store has similar colours or uses blue shirts to show who's an employee. Oh, and that they somehow think the term "geek" can't be used by anyone else. Seriously, they didn't make the colours, they didn't create the term "geek," and they're hardly the only store (or large chain) that sells computers. And unless they give their employees regular courses/training vids/whatever to keep them apprised of the new technologies and models they are selling they shouldn't be surprised if people don't think their employees don't always have half a clue as to what the products are or how they differ.

I would never go to Best Buy for any kind of advice or expert opinion on computers or anything else. I have nothing against the people who work there, but let's face it, if they had any real expertise they wouldn't be working a floor job at a big box store for minimum wage.

I find employees with better experience with electronics in Sears.

I can't think of a single other use of the word "geek" other than "Best Buy Employee." I also cannot name a single other store where the employees dress in blue. I further cannot name a single time I walked into a Best Buy and got any useful help. All signs point to them. >.>

Dude, I work at best buy and I'm pretty awesome. I'd rather sell cameras and use my 11 years of photography experience there than work for a photography sweat-shop that would run me into the ground... also, I make slightly more than minimum wage. But yeah, this whole business is pretty ridiculous... a lot of stores in town have employees wearing blue (shopping immediately after my shifts are hazardous) and the word "geek" has been around long before Best Buy. I just hope they don't file for chapter 11 until after I find a better job.

I think it's because it's such a blatant shot across the bow, as it were. This isn't Mac vs. PC, this is more on par with Verizon vs. AT&T nastiness, where I believe it was getting to the point that the courts had to step in and tell them both to knock it off, because each had sued the other for slander and even the judge was tired of their kvetching.
