Don't the fundies find the U.N. to be ebil anyway? What're they going to say? "U.N. supports pedos", "The U.N. is forcing perversion into our children", "U.N. is encouraging sin"? in other words, they'll be saying the same crap that they've been saying for the past...what, 20, 30 years? If your only proof against homosexuality is 20/30ish years of superstition, fear, BS science, and blood of others, that's a pretty damn good sign that you've lost. ...[/rant]

Yeah, didn't you know that the UN is an attempt of those godless, communist, gay heathens to create a Muslim, oppressive, anti-Christian Nazi one world government?
I can see the fundie quotes piling up. And I am surprised (in a good way) that South Africa supported this, considering that Jacob Zuma claimed that the best way to get rid of AIDS was to have sex with a virgin (different issues, but it shows how crazy he is). And didn't Brazil legalise gay marriage earlier this year?

And I agree with Yoyo's comment; we support the resolution in the UN, but we completely ignore it in our country itself. Hypocritical much?

Didn't the African and Middle Eastern countries successfully campaign to remove sexual orientation from the UN's list of groups who weren't to be denied human rights a year or two ago? The UN really needs to decide who's ass they want to kiss.

This is awesome news and a huge step forward, but it is sad how it took until 2011 to get this shit done.

And didn't Brazil legalise gay marriage earlier this year? Just to clarify, South Africa has had gay marriage legal for a while now. However that said, South Africa does have a pathetic HIV problem. Caused in part by the infidelity of the president, the notion that you can cure lesbians through group rape, and that you can cure HIV by raping a baby. (This is a general and entirely false notion. Jacob Zuma on the other hand believes you can prevent HIV by having a shower after sex.) While I appreciate the sentiment of the gay rights resolution. I have to wonder what good it will do. To my knowledge the UN resolutions are largely unenforceable even in the member states. So while this sounds nice, I have a strong feeling this will not help the gay people in Uganda, despite Uganda being a member state.
