Whereupon they will run up the deficit giving tax cuts to the rich and destroying welfare programs.

I was waiting for one side or the other to play this card. The deadline looms. Time to threaten the general public, and old people in particular. The politicians are all blowing copious amounts of smoke. For the next couple of weeks the dispute will be strictly for publicity purposes.

Right now, my bet is on the 14th amendment. It's questionable, but at least that is already in place.

One thing to help put this in perspective. They're looking at cutting or completely eliminating the income for 70 million people. That's 23% of the population. Twenty-three fucking percent of the people in the country won't be able to pay rent, utilities, or be able to afford food. This includes a very large segment of the GOP's voting base, yet I'm saddened that a lot of them probably won't blame the right people for this mess.
I try to not be paranoid, but if they don't get this fixed and continue paying the people they've guaranteed income to, I see armed rebellion as a realistic possibility, even if they target the wrong people.

What option is left when diplomacy won't work? The politicians clearly aren't listening to their constituents on anything, so what have we to gain by asking them to stop shoving their dicks down our throats crippling the programs we rely on?

Mr. Obama's comments followed remarks from the Senate's top Republican, who said Tuesday that he did not see a way for Republicans and Democrats to come to agreement on meaningful deficit reduction as long as Mr. Obama remains in office.
"After years of discussions and months of negotiations, I have little question that as long as this president is in the Oval Office, a real solution is probably unattainable," Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said in remarks on the Senate floor. NO. FREAKING. DUH.You guys have been stonewalling every single suggestion Obama has put on the table since he took office. Anything that you could possibly block, you did. He fucking handed you bills on a platter and you refused them, solely because they were coming from him. It's not Obama's fault that you guys decided to throw an epic hissy fit. It's not Obama's fault that you assholes decided to ignore every attempt at nonpartisanship. And guess what? It's not Obama's fault that we're in this mess in the first place.Apparently you assholes lack sufficient brainpower to remember our last president. You know, the C-student who couldn't string together a coherent sentence and caused one of the worst rifts in the Republican party. The one whose policies turned a surplus into the worst deficit in American history. That one. And you guys throwing your little partisan temper tantrums are not helping. You guys have just showed your hand. It's not because you're trying to be responsible, it's not because you're trying to be non-partisan, it's because you're mad that McCain and Palin didn't win in 2008. And so you're doing everything you can to get back at the Dems, even at the cost of the entire country. You're insane. YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY INSANE. You have stepped beyond the bounds of hilarity. You have officially gone into negative numbers with exactly how much sympathy I have for you idiots. You're driving the country into the ground because you're mad at the president? Guess what? We suffered through eight years of Bush and didn't do nearly as much damage as you have done in four. Who's worse for the country, then? You or him? Keep in mind, Smurfette, this is coming from the same man who said the GOP's top goal is simply to make Obama a one term president.

The problem with current Republicans is that they WANT to get rid of SS - and then as an added bonus blame it on Obama. Plus, they don't want to pay taxes at all (they apparently consider it a theft and obligation only of the poor*) and get rid of Planned Parenthood and other health and social services for the poor. And THEN - they'll creat a few jobs... in India or Brazil.
They'll do anything to make their vision of "small government" (read: a weak government that works only on making sure the interests of the rich are secure) a reality.
* Where poor = 98% of the USians that aren't multimillionaires, so they do not belong to the Club.

So...they're going to fuck SSI because they're throwing a hissy fit? Whelp, time to stop being nice. Armed revolt. If they won't listen to the people, maybe they'll listen to them when they're on the business end of an M16.

If they won't listen to the people, maybe they'll listen to them when they're on the business end of an M16. Then they'll crush it with tanks, blame it on the opposition, and then remove vestiges of democracy Nazi-style. And their propaganda machine will call it a triumph of democracy, true patriots, believers and American way (TM). That's likely to happen when such people control the government and have access to guns much better than ordinary people. I think the only real way to remove the threat of fascist takeover is a peaceful and organized activism - informing people, educating them and helping fight attacks against the rights of individuals in courts and in public discussions. And get to the rich people as well - there are a few good apples in this rotten barrel.

Forgive me for not noting this before, but previous post was hyperbole. Outraged? Yes. But, diplomacy can work...just need to yell at them. I think they may have hearing problems.

The FBI and CIA lack a sense of humor or hyperbole, unfortunately.
