Oh Jesus...I've only been paying cursory attention because I'm studying for a Calculus entrance exam... but somehow I had a feeling they'd try to defund the health care plan with this deal. When he put Medicare and Social Security on the table I thought "Why don't they go after the healthcare thing, that's what they really want..."

What they really want is the complete dismantling of all social spending in the United States. They want Social Security gone...that was the real goal behind the movement to "privatize" it. They want Medicare & Medicade gone. Welfare gone. Unemployment benefits gone. Food and housing assistance gone. The Republican party is the party of "Fuck you, buddy, I got mine." They want an America where if you have money you are fine, and if you don't you can starve to death in the street.
They are too stupid and short sighted to understand that if the lower classes vanished....there would be no one to grow their food, pick up their garbage, cook their food, clean their houses, cut their hair, shine their shoes, sew their clothes, sell them their cars, build their houses, stock their store shelves, and on and on and on and on and on.... They are too boneheaded to realize that the wealthy classes MUST provide for the poorer classes because it is the existence of the poorer classes that permit them to have their lifestyle in the first place.

My mom was telling me the other day that she thinks that we are coming close to another revolution or something. I don't know if that is going to happen or not but with this whole thing going on, I believe that Americans are angry as hell. I know I am. I depend on Section 8, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. If they stop that then I am screwed. Not only will I lose my apartment, but I will lose my funding for school (being paid for by SS through the PASS program), my medical insurance etc.
I know I am not the only one that is going to be affected and this kind of thing is pissing me off.

That seems to be the consensus here too, that we're rushing headlong into Civil War 2, except this time it's the Republicans being stubborn fuckers instead of the Democrats... although it'll still pretty much be North versus South. Although in recognition I'd really like to amend that to The North + Allies in the South versus Stupid People both North and South.
Or as I posited in my history class... the history of America is one half of the country wanting to do something heinous and the other half, while going along with said heinousness for awhile, wanting to be less heinous and having to put the first half in their place. Again, and again, and again.

I want to be optimistic that the GOP will cave, but it's looking less likely.
If they fuck up, I want figurative heads on a platter.

The British Business secretary just labelled the US Teatards in congress "nutters".Wonder how that will be received on the hill? If the shoe fits... except that he said "a few" nutters, rather than "great bloody piles" of them. They hold 49% of the power!

From the GOP's POV they are in Win/Win
IF Obama caves then the GOp gets all the cuts it wants without a single tax increase. The Republican meme gets reinforced by Obama the "Socialist"
IF Obama doesn't cave then the debt ceiling doesn't get raised and cuts happen anyway. The tea bagger base (who actually wants a default) gets what they want and maybe lays off the GOP for a while.
In either case, the economy will likely falter, people will suffer for lack of services.. al of which the GOP will blame on Obama.
Whether it works out that way is another matter.

We really do need to bring back the guilotine... ;D As capital punishment methods go, the guillotine is actually quicker and less painful than most modern methods. The only reason it's no longer used is because John and Jane Q. Public could no longer stomach the sight of blood.

I'm thinking that the high ranking politicians have the goal to make us so sick of this shit that we will be happy with any last minute deal, despite how crippling it will be to the lower and middle classes. Possibly even the lower upper class. I am still dumbfounded that when Republicans demanded $2 trillion in cuts that Obama suggested $4 trillion (with some revenue increases).
