www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,588964,00.html Yes, Mr. Beck, the poor in 3rd world countries are generally worse off than the poor in most developed countries. But I'd like to see you try to live on a low income like these people you claim aren't poor.

If there's a group in American society that complains about overwrought problems that, taken in global context, are not severe or important*, it is Mr Beck's supporters, and Glenn himself.
* What I take to be Beck's argument against the existence of first world poverty.

it does not matter if you are starving in Africa or starving in America it does not change the fact that there is no food. The conditions surrounding the poor in first and third world countries are different, but all of them are poor and pretty much royally screwed either way. Well, that's not really true, because in some first world countries welfare programs exist that ease the burden on the poor ever so slightly. although just because they get some welfare, does not change they fact that they are broke, homeless, jobless and out of luck.

Invalid argument. I know in Britain there's people on low incomes who have to skip meals and so on becuase they don't have enough money. that isn't poor to Glenn Beck? 2. the status of poverty is always relative within a society but people's perceptions etc are also relative to that society. So if a poor person is stuck at the bottom they are likely to be more stressed out and die younger than the rich

So this isn't like the "no gays" argument from Iran? Damn. I wanted to mock him.
But, like oftenpartisan's example, I found myself skipping meals when I was younger or relying on school programs (They served breakasts for low-income kids) because I was poor growing up.
In short, Beck off, you Becking moron.

Beck has neglected to mention one thing: "wealth" is a relative term. You are only "wealthy" if you have more than those around you. If everyone in the USA had ten million dollars in their wallet, then 10 million dollars would not make you wealthy, and only having 4 million would make you lower class.
That's precisely why the "wealthy" class not only has a vested interest in remaining wealthy, but also in keeping the "poor" classes poor. You are only wealthy if you have more when compared to others, so they need to keep the gap present and ever-widening. Wealth brings privilege and luxury, both things that require a "poor" class to provide. The wealthy wish to keep their privilege and luxury, so they need to keep a significant portion of the population poor.
You keep the poor quiet by implying that if they work hard enough they can someday join the ranks of the wealthy. "Don't tax the wealthy," they say, "because one day you will be wealthy yourself, and you don't want to be taxed, do you?" But this is a lie. The game is rigged. The vast, vast majority of millionaires in the world didn't earn it; they were born that way. Occasionally someone, a Bill Gates or an Oprah Winfrey, manage to claw their way into the wealthy class through sheer intelligence or talent, but these are anomalies. They are like the fine print on diet supplements. "Results not typical for all users." But just like the diet pills, the wealthy sell their lifestyle of shameless excess and elitism by implying that you, yes YOU, are that one-in-a-billion exception to the rules, that you, yes YOU, will someday scratch off the million dollar lotto ticket, that you, yes YOU, will be welcomed into the ranks of the wealthy where you, yes YOU, can take you place by the side of all the other creme de la creme and piss on the heads of the plebes.
But it's just not going to happen. The game is rigged. The dice are loaded. The cards are marked and the slot machine is jimmied. When Beck says there are no "poor" in the USA he invites us to compare ourselves to places in the world where having two pairs of pants is considered wealth. He says, "Look at them! Our poor have color TVs! They must not really be poor!" But he fails to note that over there two pairs of pants are luxury because most people barely have ONE pair of pants. By comparison, the two-pair guy is rich.
So Beck says you can't determine poverty by comparing people to others, and then immediately turns around and denies poverty in the USA by comparing people to others.
I don't know what is sadder, the fact that when Beck looks at the desperate poor of the third world, his only thought is the shockingly compassion-less and cold-hearted "Damn, our poor sure are a bunch of whiney assholes!" or that he is undoubtedly totally unaware of his own hypocrisy.
