Nickerson, please remind me again, what planet did you borrow your lexicon from if "tar baby" (Only moderately less spiteful than that little N-word) isn't racist? I think he missed Racial Slurs 112 when he was a kid. Fuck my dad taught the course, back then. I'm fairly sure I know...most any racial slur one could rationally think of, and "tar baby" is not only one of them, its painfully obvious to anyone who has a working mind. For reference, Nicky, tar is generally very dark: Now, compare that to the skin coloration of the person in question (Mr. Obama), and you'll realize he's calling him tantamount to a "darkie."

He said, "negotiating with the President was like touching a tar baby, you get stuck to it"
That was the whole point of the tar baby in the Uncle Remus stories was to entrap Br'er Rabbit. That is the context he used it in.
Was it a bad choice, yes. Was he meaning to be racists, it doesn't look that way to me.

Was that really the first thing he thinks of when trying to come up with a simile for "something that sticks to you when you touch it"? Even if he wasn't *intending* for it to be racist, it's a kind of "left-field" reference; it seems possible that he's being subconsciously racist (assuming, of course, he's not lying about his intent).

For someone that probably grew up with Uncle Remus Stories it may have been. He could be racist. I just don't think this comment from him was or was meant to be.

Ah well. You can't expect america to get with times that quickly.
They still think padded rugby with artificial pauses for ad breaks is "football", when grownup countries codified the laws of football in the same year americans had almost finished their pathetic handbag-fight over whether brown people should be considered people.
Give it another 100 years and they might grow up a bit.

"I used a racially loaded term, but with context!" doesn't make it much better in this instance.

I had no idea that the term was racist; I never heard any of the Br'er Rabbit stories, and even with my racist fundie extended family, they'd never used that term.
Then again, I'm not a 57-year-old who was born and raised in the Deep South (Kansas counts, right?) so I'm not sure I can defend any of it.

Ostensibly you're also not a member of a body who caught shit for the exact same thing a couple times in the past, either.
