Besides, online petitions are useless. Basically all petitions are useless. They're only good for getting people talking.

Besides, online petitions are useless. Except in this case, where it actually worked and something got done. Change.org is probably the most useful internet petition site. It actually sends an e-mail to the relevant parties (usually your senators and representatives, in the case the police) when you sign. At the end of the day, it doesn't guarantee any action but actually sending out even a form e-mail to (for example) your congressman about Caylee's Law is ten times more effective than just putting your name on a website.

From reading Vene's link, it looks like the petition didn't really do much, the deciding factor was Mabus being dumb enough to spam the police.
His Villainous Breakdown was the funniest part.

If he's making direct threats, he definitely deserves to at least be investigated, and hopefully placed on probation & house arrest whilst being barred from the use of a computer for the duration. If he breaks any of those conditions, send him to jail.
Some court appointed therapy would be nice, too.
eta: More than anything, I think Mabus needs psychiatric help. He shouldn't be excused for the threats (he's never struck me as being legally insane), but the best possible solution would be something rehabilitation-oriented. The man is nuts.

I've accused him of being an Old One, so I think he is insane.
But his last few posts showed that he does at least have some awareness of what he's doing.

Possible, but I don't know how involved (or not crazy) his mother was.

I doubt it was his mother. He probably panicked and tried to cover his ass when he realized that he might be in trouble.

I think the petition helped. I think the moral of the story here is that if you want anything to get done, you have to bombard the police with emails until they agree to look into it if you give them some peace and quiet.
