Well, if there was little physical evidence linking them to it, and it's possible that they didn't do it, then perhaps I should judge them as innocent.
That being said, regardless of whether or not they did or didn't do it, they will live with that stigma for the rest of their lives, due to how society works.

Imagine how hard it'll be to get a job or to live a normal life when your criminal record states you plead guilty to a heinous crime.

I am guessing that the settlement and/or law suit proceeds might last them a lifetime...jurys aint sympathetic to DAs that wrongfully imprison.

I meant what if they want to move away and get a job and stuff like that where people don't know they were wrongly convicted?

I just heard about them last night from that 50 Greatest Documentaries show on Current. I got excited, but I have to say, it's bittersweet to know they got out because they agreed to plea that's a guilty plea in all but name.

Oh look, they took the easy way out and wasted the efforts of years of work of people trying to see them fully acquitted. People will forever have the belief that they likely did it because they didn't go the full yard even though it was likely they would be fully acquitted, I mean, fuck, even the Prosecutor against them said they would likely be acquitted based on the new evidence.

That's a little harsh, Echols was and is in seriously bad health, to the point of it being possible that he wouldn't survive another 2 or so years for the retrial.

When you've spent 18 years in prison and are offered a chance to leave right now or stay for a while and go through a new trial (the outcome of which is not predetermined), I think your stop giving a flying fuck about what people will think.

People will forever have the belief that they likely did it because they didn't go the full yard even though it was likely they would be fully acquitted, I mean, fuck, even the Prosecutor against them said they would likely be acquitted based on the new evidence. That's very judgmental of you. They did what they did because Echols was on death row. In Arkansas that means you get poor nutrition, almost no medical care (for example, the only dental care provided is tooth extraction with no follow up or reconstruction), and only basic necessities of life. Echols was in very poor health, still is, and likely will be for life now. The plea they entered was only done once the other two men were made aware of Echol's situation. Under this plea, while they legally plead guilty, they are permitted to maintain their innocence and pursue remuneration. Of course, the state now considers the case closed and will expend no effort at all in investigating the case; it will all be at the expense of the men themselves and their families. The state offered the plea because they just want the whole thing to go away, and under this plea, they can claim victory and wash their hands of it. They don't want a new trial because of the significant risk they will lose, and then have to go through the process of being sued for wrongful imprisonment. Basically this deal boils down to: "Yeah, we know we can't convict you a second time, but we'll let you out right now if you agree not to sue us for locking you up in the first place." The state wants this thing to just vanish before the elections. Hopefully people won't let them make it disappear.
