Jack Layton, the leader of the Official Opposition, passed away from cancer. www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2011/08/22/layton-obituary.htmlIt's rather sad too, seeing as the New Democrat Party (The farthest mainstream party we have) just won the most seats ever, disloging both the nigh unshakable Liberal and Bloq Quebequois. Even my father, who votes for the Conservative Party, was sad to see him go. He was a good man who stuck to his principles, instead of going into double-speak, like so many other politicians.

I've personally volunteered for the NDP, Juna, and several members of my family have at one point in time either directly served a candidate, or even been a candidate themselves. I'm greatly saddened by this news, and honestly, a bit worried... the last thing Canada needs right now is more power consolidated in Harper's hands.

I'm sad to see him go. While he's never been my candidate of choice, I admired his dedication to continuing to work for as long as he could, his bravery in facing his illness, and the guts it took to take on the BQ and Liberals and come out victorious. His passing is tragic, but I hope it brings his family some peace to know that he lived a rich life, having made a real impact on the nation, and that he will not be forgotten. His brave fight against cancer, and his dedication to politics in general, won the admiration of Canadians on all ends of the political spectrum, myself included.
Rest in peace.

I haven't seen the article, but my brother mentioned seeing one which basically used Layton's death as a chance to bash the NDP. Apparently this journalist thinks the timing of his death is "convenient", whatever the fuck that's supposed to mean. God damn vultures.

What's this, the NDP losing its storied, principled leader just after they win a significant political victory? How convenient for them, just what every party hopes will happen!
There seem to be a few parallels between Layton and Ted Kennedy, looking at the article.

I really liked Jack Layton, and started supporting the NDP because of him. I know it is stupid because I don't know him personally, but I cried when I heard the news.
Goodbye Jack, a good portion of Canada will miss you.

Goodbye Jack, a good portion of Canada will miss you. I didn't cry, but I got a bit of a lump in my throat when I re-watched the video footage of him stepping down, especially when he said he planned on being back by the end of summer. Same when I saw footage of him and his wife -- you can tell that they really loved each other.
