The huge shout out to the Sultan of Oman was because he paid the one million dollar bail for the two. It has to have sucked for them though, they've been used as political pawns for the past two years.

It is a lot freer than other areas of the Middle East, as I recall, Al-Jazeera is based there and they wouldn't get away with reporting like that in places like Saudi Arabia or Kuwait.

Don't get me wrong, it ain't a democracy and Wikipedia lists free speech rights as "limited". But compared to many of its neighbors, its just fine. Kind of like the redneck house on a street full of crack dens and meth labs. Sure, there's a rusting truck on his un-mowed lawn, but it is still the nicest house on the block.

Its kind of like Kuwait...Free speech is OK as long as you don't criticize the monarchy directly, stay away from women issues, etc

According to wikipedia, who cites a source I am too lazy to investigate. Also, I keep wanting to type it as "OMAN" because of the DC Comics character OMAC.
