That probably explains why allowing myself to fall asleep and wake up on my body's own schedule (though being pushed forward slightly) has greatly improved my disposition.

It's worth pointing out that polyphasic sleep is not itself a recognized optimal sleeping pattern, merely one possibility among many. I suspect a biphasic pattern is how most humans would naturally sleep absent artificial light, but there will always be people who don't fit the typical habits.

I would say it's optimal in the sense that it gives you the most out of the least amount of sleep, but what I was really trying to get at is that the "best way" is the way that's right for the individual.
