Two days ago, France had an election for one half of the seats in its Senate, the upper house in its bicameral legislature. For the first time in the history of the Fifth Republic, the left wing (composed of a coalition of the Socialist Party, Communist Party, and other left-wing parties) has an absolute majority of seats in this chamber.
The Senate is not directly elected by the people. So we will have to see whether the people will also vote in a left-wing majority in the National Assembly (lower house) this April.
For gay-rights watchers like me, this Senate election will hopefully put France halfway to legalizing equal marriage rights for same-sex couples.

No, I'm just saying for people who closely watch gay rights/gay marriage news this is exceptionally good news. I am not terribly knowledgeable of French politics. The party I agree with most would be one that is both left-wing politically like the Socialists yet anti-European Union and anti-Euro like the rabidly right-wing Front National, but there doesn't seem to be a major party that has this criteria, hence my lack of enthusiasm. (Although I live in France I am not a French citizen and I cannot vote here.)
