My own views on illegal immigrants notwithstanding, I was thinking; "What kind of fuckface would begrudge uncuffing a woman so she can give birth?"
...and then I saw who the sheriff was and thought: "Oh, that fuckface."

What's the point of cuffing them to the bed in the first place? What, are they going to escape while giving birth?

She's undocumented, not inhuman.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't arrest the correct procedure for an undocumented immigrant?
However, I fail to see why they had to have both hands handcuffed to hospital beds. They were under constant guard supervision so such measures were not necessary. At the very least one hand could have been free.
However, one should also consider the dangers imposed with having someone in custody being free in a hospital. There are a large number of dangerous implements in hospitals and having a hand free could allow them to pick up a make shift weapon. In this case though, given the original crime the were stopped for, and that they were not dangerous criminals, I believe handcuffs were unnecessary.
One last note though, given the appalling state of the American health care system, this was probably for the best. Without documentation I doubt this woman would have been admitted into a hospital. At least while in police custody the police are duty bound to ensure their prisoners safety including taking care of any medical issues. Hence, being in custody allowed her to give birth in a hospital.
I believe there are many facets to this story. If the woman was a known violent criminal with a history of violent escape attempts I would say their behavior was entirely justified. However, as this case goes, she was just an undocumented Immigrant who seemed to be complying with the police as best she could, and such measures were excessive.

She's undocumented, not inhuman. Silly girl. Reel Amurrikunz don't subscribe to that nonsense. Besides, she probably just had that baby to serve as an anchor anyway. Bitch should have just been shot in the uterus. (/sarcasm)

Wait a minute.
We don't even do this with people who commit crimes that actually harm other people and get injured while being caught.

I would really, really like to hear a story of Sheriff Arpaio losing his papers in Calcutta and being held for six months while the prison administrators debated what to do with him. That would be natural justice!

Should be the way for every birth across the whole country.
Out of the womb, into the detention centre. Until you can prove that your child isn't going to grow up to be a senseless waste of biomass they aren't going to see the light of day.

Without documentation I doubt this woman would have been admitted into a hospital. I can't speak to all the hospitals in the US, of course, but the ones I've had to visit over time, most recently about a month ago, there is nothing at all asked about a patient's citizenship. Nothing on the intake form, nothing in any of the paperwork that I've seen at least. My nurse friends also tell me that they just treat, they don't ask. One of the arguments about why healthcare costs were as high as they are revolved around illegal immigrants being able to walk into a hospital, get treatment, and walk out without leaving enough information to send a bill, much less collect it. It happens regularly, though maybe not as regularly as folks with other agendas may claim. But being undocumented wouldn't have likely stopped her from getting treatment.

Huh. I came into this thread fully ready for the title to be an exaggeration. "How dare they arrest this woman and make her give birth while under police custody in the hospital" kind of thing, from the kind of website/blog that favors ignorring the current laws completely and just ignoring illegal immigrants.
But no. They did actually handcuff a woman who was in labor to a bed. Because that's such a fucking escape risk. God damn it, a little compassion is OK to show people whose motive was securing a better life.
