news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8354533/kids-taught-to-sing-alternative-national-anthemThousands of children are singing an alternative version of the Australian national anthem at school assemblies that removes any reference to the Southern Cross and appoints "Christ" as the nation's head of state.
...
Federal Education Minister Peter Garrett has said national protocols prevent the national anthem from being modified and that alterations to the anthem had no place in the state's educational institutions.
...
Ian Dalton, executive director of APC said: "There are many opportunities to express pride in your faith, but the national anthem is not one of them. It shouldn't be tampered with."
Despite the criticism, Christian Schools Australia chief executive officer Stephen O'Doherty said he will encourage schools to sing the Christian version loudly. I'm not the most patriotic Australian by any means, but I screw with neither the flag nor the anthem, and I appreciate those who do the same thing. In fact, I hold the flag and anthem in much higher esteem than I do the rantings of a collection of Bronze and Iron Age goatherds and fishermen. So in other words, keep your fucking Christian mitts off my fucking country's anthem!

I hate patriotism and nationalism, but this is just plain, disgusting indoctrination. Take their funding, let God provide it.

Agreed. Private schools must accept government regulation if they want government money (no religious indoctrination, for instance) and they have to obey the law of the land anyway. But I think that, if they're so much better than public schools, they should just be let do their own thing without any government funding. Free market!

Urgh. Sing whatever you like, schools, but don't you dare call it the "national anthem".
This is indoctrination, pure and simple.

So, some kids are going to be hearing that Christ is the "cornerstone" of the nation. Does that mean that non-Christians are, by extension, outside the nation?

That Christian verse has been around since the 90's, though it is surprising to see it being so widely used all of a sudden as opposed to the occasional Christian event.
That said though, if those schools are teaching this verse as the proper national anthem, than it's pretty clear they're teaching outright lies and as such should be closed down.

No Muslims allowed. And Aborigines are completely peripheral to the whole thing too. So what if it's their land?

And this sort of thing is why, if the fundies succeed in completely taking over America and making it a Christian theocracy, I will escape to New Zealand, instead of Australia, despite the suggestion made by a user of FSTDT a while back.

Now, now, we can just export the fundies to the Outback and take the coast for ourselves.

Stick them in an unseaworthy boat with no functioning engine, tow it out into the ocean away from land or shipping lanes, cut 'em loose and return home, safe in the knowledge that we won't ever be hearing from them again.

Yeah, but the clean up is a pain in the ass. Not if you don't let them off the boat. The tow the boat out to sea and shoot holes in it: The Navy gets target practice, the sharks get fed and the boat becomes a new reef for divers to swim around. A win-win situation all round. ;D

Might as well save on bullets eh? In fact, the navy can get even more target practise when they inevitably abandon ship and try to swim to safety.
