So, the Supreme Court Hearings on Prop 8, the Gay Marriage amendment, took place today. And per MSNBC analysts, it's not looking too good. The Court appears ready to uphold Prop. 8. The only shining part of this horseshit is that atleast those 18,000 couples that were wedded during the time Gay Marriage was legal and Prop 8 will get to keep their unions solid. As for the rest of our gay brothers and sisters in Cali, the news is bleak. Now, the Court hasn't made it's decision yet but it's not looking good.
And why? Why is my relationship not good enough? Why is my relationship different? I've been with my girlfriend 4 years, which is longer than some hetero married couples have even KNOWN each other. We've weathered the same obstacles, we've undergone immense scrutiny from our families, our friends, the public and now.....and now this.
Now I live in Texas, one of the reddest states in the Union. But Cali was supposed to be it, don't you understand? Getting Proposition 8 overturned was supposed to be another step closer to every state having it. And these Fundies....these assholes that we lampoon day in and day out, these are the kind of people that got Prop. 8 on the ballot in the first place. These Rapture Ready retards or World Net Daily or any other Fundie hell hole, these are the one's that passed Proposition 8. Bigots, who are miserable in their own lives so they have to disrupt ours. There are millions upon millions of gay people in the U.S. alone and do you really think, Fundies, each one of them CHOSE to be gay!? Why the fuck would I CHOOSE this shitty life??? Huh? My girlfriend has never been with a man, ever. She proclaimed at the age of 8 that she was gay and she's never even been attracted once to a man in all her 24 years. Now do you really think, Fundies, at the age of 8 my girlfriend CHOSE to be gay?
Yes I'm mad. I'm mad as all hell. And I hope, in my lifetime, my girlfriend and I won't just be roommates in the eyes of the state. That the love we make, the home we share, the life we have fought for is recognized by everyone.
Thanks for listening, dear FSTDT-ers. Sorry for the rant. I just had to get that off my chest. Hopefully they reverse it in the end and give love a chance.

You still have one more to go. Also, you can always get together another ballot initiative like Prop 8 that'll over turn Prop 8.
It's a blow yes but women and blacks in America also suffered the same blows.
Ironbite-times are bleak but they can and will and must get better.

That was the state Supreme Court correct? Yes, California Supreme Court. Which makes it even more stupid, because they had originally made Gay Marriage legal back in, I believe it was May? Before the Fundies got enough sigs to put Prop 8 on the Nov. 4th ballot.

Oh, Mozmode, believe me, I understand! Between that and the Dow, my blood pressure just soared today!
Come to the Northeast, honey. Winter here sucks and people can be nasty, but you can come home and snuggle up to your lawfully wedded wife.

It will probably take some time to get to that point, but at some point it will.

Go to a state that performs gay marriages. Then, to quote someone who is famous but shouldn't be, "Git er done". Then go back to your home state. Your marriage, performed in another state, has to be recognized, constitutionally, by every other state! I am sure that the ACLU would be happy to defend your case in court. There is a thread on the old site dealing with that, and unless I don't know how to read, the constitution of the United States requires all states to recognize marriages from any other state. Try it, please.

Good God, it pisses me off that the Supreme Court might uphold a ruling of discrimination in a country that is supposed to be for equality. Reading your post made my heart sink a bit. Sometimes I'm really saddened by the way we treat each other.

I do believe that Texas has a "Defense of Marriage" (phhfffttt) bill that I believe was passed back in '03 stating the state will not recognize out of state same sex unions or marriages. I live in TX btw. The defeat in California hurts all LGBTers, especially those living in states that have very little chance of seeing gay marriage anytime soon. If they can't get gay marriage in California, home of Harvey Milk and San Francisco, Texas is going to take 500 FUCKING YEARS.

There is a thread on the old site dealing with that, and unless I don't know how to read, the constitution of the United States requires all states to recognize marriages from any other state. Try it, please. MA is the only state that currently allows same sex marriage (not Civil Unions or Domestic partnership), and its laws state that you cannot marry there if you cannot marry in your own state. This is a throwback from the days when it was illegal for whites and blacks to marry in many states. Regardless, it's been challenged since Clinton signed the DOMA. While I agree that the DOMA is unconstitutional, I don't see it being repealed or overturned anytime soon. Of the states that offer same sex civil unions, all of them I know the laws to limit it to a state issue. Means they almost always do not transfer across state lines, with the exception of a couple of states which actually state they will recognise your out of state marriage/CU. Jersey's one example. I'm not saying I agree with it, and I hope people fight this. It's crap. It really is. And it hurts a lot of people who really don't deserve being punished for being born different.

Any chance they'll come out with a civil union? Just to try and make everyone happy?
Personally I like the idea that if it's government done it's a civil union. If it's through a church it's a marriage. I'd be perfectly happy with a hetero-civil union.

If it's through a church it's a marriage. I'd be perfectly happy with a hetero-civil union. That'd be great, if we could get the people who object to same sex marriage to give up marriage as well. I'm all for civil unions or domestic partnerships for all. But since the argument is about the word itself, they're not going to give it up, either. The problem with Civil Unions is that they are separate but equal laws. It's possible they are a necessary evil, but that doesn't really make me feel any better about them. In fact, the parallel to the old "Separate but equal" laws are very apt, since gays are granted only a fraction of the rights straight couples are. Now, if everyone had the same civil unions, that wouldn't be an issue. But making them truly equal is still a battle.

I believe that the Scandianvian countries have done this. That's why fundies trot out such huge numbers of children from unwed mothers. They're not counting the couples who just went down to the local courthouse.
My opinion is that this way the baby can have it's bottle. You want marriage to be a big church thing, the rest of us (who don't have $30.000 to waste) will head down to the county clerks. Of course there will be some who bitch and howl because they want to be married even though they don't go to church. Others will bitch and howl because of teh gehz. But I still think it would be easier to push this through, you cant say teh gehz are ruining the sanctity of marriage.
