I know it's a topic that's been brought up a million times, but the most recent mainpage example has just made my jaw drop 12 feet to the floor yet again. No wonder these people find it so incredibly easy to believe that heaven will be better than they can even begin to imagine. When they *try* to imagine a place of perfection and unfathomable happiness, they are worried about plucking their eyebrows. W.T.F.
"But what about plucked eyebrows? Most women love doing that a lot. Very few women don't pluck their eyebrows. We're gonna have plucked brows there? Or will they all be grown back? And what about makeup? Its hard to picture wearing makeup up there..."
And oh yes, can I even touch the allegation that very few women don't pluck their eyebrows. Also, quite aside from their completely unconscious extreme xenocentrism, most of the women they know love the act of plucking their eyebrows? Really? I mean... I've known quite a few boring face-lifted aging southern belle fundie women in my day, but I didn't picture that they "love doing that".

I used to get rid of mine completely. Then again, I didn't do it because I loved doing it; I did it because I was a stupid pre-teen with unsteady hands and a need for symmetry. On the bright side, now that they've grown back, I don't really have a desire to mess with them any more! Also, my need for symmetry has vanished. Huzzah.
I also find it funny that she thinks that it's the action of doing it that "most women love." While I am sure there are some who do like/love it, I'm surprised she didn't first think that it was the result "most women love," rather than the action.

I guess vanity isn't a sin when they do it.

That's just sad. It's like they've given up on their lives.

Yeah, and I find it even sadder than a sort of giving up on one's life where someone sits around winding fanciful and amazing tales while they do nothing in real life. This is like... if the sorts of D&D nerds that never leave the house or date or exercise were rolling dice and making up stories about going to the kitchen for another box of cheetos. They don't even have a conception of anything close to the amazingness that this world, that they can reach out and touch, could offer. I couldn't stomach reading to much more of the original thread, but they're even talking about "Will we be able to change our new magic bodies in heaven" but it's not even "If so, I would love to sprout wings and fly and fly, and then shrink to smaller than a molecule as I zipped through rainbows and then spend 10 years really understanding what it's like to be a fly, then throw a giant party where all of my friends grew their magic shapeshifting hair into the best colors that our human earth eyes can't perceive and have Jesus judge who had the best, and give them a magic cookie, but of course we'd all be perfect and love each other and no one would be jealous of winning!" No, it's "Oh, maybe we won't have hair on our legs and underarms so we wouldn't have to shave, or men could grow their beards long or stay clean-shaven without having to shave if they wanted to LOL :-) :-) :-0 :-) :-) amirite lolololol?? :-) " It's like... HOW CAN THAT BE ALL YOU'VE GOT about what you think is the best POSSIBLE existence? HOOOOOOOW! Some part of me wants to take all the poor RR members and whisk them away to a beautiful place and play with superhero toys and my little ponies and make them make mobius strips and hexahexaflexagons and make up stories to tell each other and play hide and seek and look at great art and do stupid science tricks and hope that someone will be saved from that dull little box that they've shut themselves into. But I'm a big fluffy hippie.

Now Lonelocust, that's why we love you, for precisely that.
A forum regular over on battle.net has this for his sig. Although I tend to detest Frank and his "brilliance" never let it be said I can't appreciate good wisdom when I see it. I believe that this is precisely what is wrong with American Jesus.

When I read stuff like that I don't see people happy about going to heaven. I see people who are really depressed and unhappy with their lives. So much so that they want to die and go some place that they think they'll finally be beautiful and perfect.

I'd die laughing if she was one of those typees that looks like a 20 dollar whore when she goes to church I have a friend who said, pointing all around her, "This can't be ALL there is...All of this is so...terrible.." My jaw just dropped...I look at everything and see glory. Whether it's standing atop mountains and looking into the valleys, stepping out of a C-130 at 20,000 ft and seeing the sun rise, just walking through the woods during a good rain..It's all just so amazing. Don't even get me started on celestial bodies..It's all so stunningly awesome and these delusional loonies just don't realize it. Worst part is? They wont even know they have wasted all the years they were given, waiting for something that doesn't exist. It's incredibly sad..

These are the same people who see the "glorious nature of the universe" as proof of his existence, yet can't seem to see anything in it except imperfection. Of course they'd probably say that humanity is flawed, not the world itself.
Never mind, though, the irony that Heaven is supposedly unfathomable by humanity, and that only our souls go to heaven, not our bodies.

Just imagine where we'd be if we attributed every single thing we didn't understand to God's glory...Oh thats right...We've been there. It was that time called the Dark Ages...

As I noted on the Main Page, it certainly is a profound concept of an afterlife.

I find it funny that they're hoping that when they go to heaven, they'll still be allowed to modify their bodies (makeup, plucked eyebrows, shaved legs) from how God made them. I mean, if God's made you with hairy legs and bushy eyebrows, isn't it a slap in God's face to want so badly to change that?
My idea of heaven would be something more like: When we reach heaven, the veil over our eyes will be pulled back, and we will suddenly be able to appreciate the stunning beauty of everything and everybody, and we will all be content and happy with ourselves, just as God made us.
But then again, I'm an unenlightened non-believer, so what do I know?

It's truly depressing that this kind of superficial bullshit apparently constitutes a paradise for some folk. It's like some form of anti-Buddhism, or other, more accurate and eloquent term that's escaping me right now.

I understand people who think there are terrible things in the world, because there are, but there are also wonderful things. And the things RR thinks are "terrible"... aren't even. They're worried about "socialism" and homosexuals. I've never seen anyone say shit about genocide (other than to compare Obama to Hitler killing the Jews somehow), FGM, factionary civil wars, torture (other to say that it's OK on teh moozlims)... no, their idea of what is so wrong with the world is non-approved rubbing of genitals and people spending "their" money to make sure other people don't suffer with common easily-curable diseases because they can't afford a doctor's visit and antibiotics. OK, now I've wandered back from Pity Land to Rage Valley. But seriously people! I want to show them something really beautiful, and something really terrible that they can WORK TO MAKE BETTER. On another note of sheer irony, an older post from the same fundie that gave us this eyebrow-plucking gem: "Is a supermodel being sinful because she is beautiful and making money off her looks? Isn't that just ego? [...]I ask this because it seems those are things that glorify man. I always look at them and think, if it was a perfect world, people would be worshiping God, not each other. In heaven, and in the new earth, i cant see any of us becoming actors, or super models...etc.. It seems its only for the ego..." My ellipsis to indicate I've cut in brackets since she also filled it with tons of random ellipses herself. fstdt.net/QuoteComment.aspx?QID=61173
