2007 will export in RTF and older Word formats if you pick 'em in the "Save As..." box. Not exactly. Some editions require you to download a patch so as to make the two files backwards compatible even if you go to save it as the older version. Thing is, the patch doesn't always work.

Well, just save it as ascii text, then. Surely formatting isn't a major issue?

That's a configuration/install fail, my good man. Who is setting up these computers that don't allow backwards compatibility between doc types that MS developed? Also, you can just use Open Office or Google docs to save your files...both are free...

The same people who made it so that Microsoft Works and Microsoft Word didn't like talking to one another, either. And yes, I'm not the only person who has reported compatibility issues between 07 and 97/05. This was actually an issue in one of my previous classes, as the prof had 07; those of us with 97/05 couldn't read the documents he was sending us.

Seriously, I've been using the same programs. I finally upgraded to 2007, but it's not unworkable. Are you sure the people who reported problems know what they're doing?

Works and Word docs can be opened between the programs. Again, it's a configuration error. This is a user issue, not a MS issue. If your prof was sending docs you couldn't read, then he was saving them as docx (Microsoft's attempt to bugger Open Office and Google). If you click on save as and select 97-2003, it saves as a doc and you have no issues. This can also be set as default in 2007

It's a common problem when you first start working in 2007. Very simply solved by RTFM or a quick Google search. (which, clearly, Amaranth has done)

HOLY SHIT! Or are you implying that you bought Microsoft brand computers? 'Cause I wasn't aware that Microsoft DID that.

When I write, I'm good at creating characters, dialog, and story, but I'm awful at details. The book I'm working on has chapters that are only a few pages long. Heck, the prologue is the longest chapter thus far, at a whopping 5 pages! I know that I hated reading Stephan King because I felt like I was reading more about 5-page description of chairs and other objects than anything else. However, I seemed to go in the opposite direction. I need to find a happy medium point. I'm not sure if that's the length of the longest chapter in KtC....

I can't draw to save my life, but writing isn't a problem. I can always just just erase it and try again. Except for my poetry which for some reason I do in pen. I might consider posting a poem or two at some point in time while disregarding the fact the lot of them are nonsense.

I'm too easily put off of continuing something. Or trying anything to begin with. I draw and write but I'm not good at either, and I'm so ridiculously easy to discourage from trying again or continuing. One negative observation and that's it, I'm done. I'd procrastinate, but I put that off, too. I'm forever leaving things half finished. Not just my personal projects, but games, books, that Torchwood miniseries... all of which I intend to finish, but never quite get around to.
