A term I hate is "I'm a good, god fearing christian" it's the god fearing bit I really just can't stand for some reason. Dude, that's why I prefer to come back with Magneto when someone says that

As a Xian, the god-fearing thing never made sense to me. I mean, aren't we supposed to feel loved by god?

As a Xian, the god-fearing thing never made sense to me. I mean, aren't we supposed to feel loved by god? Yeah, that's what I always thought, and why it bugs me so much. I don't think it paints their faith (and their whole religion by association) in a good light.

I don't think it paints their faith (and their whole religion by association) in a good light. I asked my boyfriend about it. He says that its a "mistranslation." Apparently the Hebrew word means something along the lines of "amazement and fear." I called bs.

Actually, fundies do have an answer for why evil exists. It's just that it relies on assumptions that just don't make sense.
Basically, fundies believe that there was no pain, suffering, or death up until "The Fall" when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. As soon as that happened, though, everything in the universe shifted to the way it is now.

I don't think it's a mistranslation so much as simply the ongoing evolution intelligent design of the word. Fear, I believe, used to mean something more like respectful awe rather than a sense of danger. So it's really just a problem of interpreting an archaic usage through modern terminology.

I think the fear in the old testament was fear as well though. I mean in exodus when God is on the mountain Moses asks them to stay back and they were afraid that God might break lose and consume them... cause you know he's a bad motherfucker like that

Well, you have to admit, being an all-powerful being with murderous mindset and a hair trigger temper is a pretty good way to inspire respectful awe.

Respectful? Not in the slightest. Awe? No. Try disgust.

It's a weakness that's less problematic when the target market is bronze-age goat herders.

To me, "I'll be praying for you" sounds incredibly smug. Depends on the context. Sometimes you can tell that they really mean it. Other times it comes out as a threat. I can guess which version you folks usually hear. It can also be said in a condescending fashion - like they are talking to a child that doesn't understand how the world works - as if to say: ' they will pray for you because you don't know how (or are too stupid) to do it yourself.' and you can tell which way they mean it, because if they mean it - they usually say it after you tell them something bad has happened to you. If they are using the statement as a threat or insult it's usually said after you have disagreed with them about something.

Boy, I haven't been on these forums in a LONG time!
One of my highschool friend a facebook status a few weeks back about losing her cellphone on the bus, realizing that, coming back to the bus and the busdriver handing it back to her. And after some comments she said it was just one of the "perks of being a christian on campus".
Here are some videos that follow along with this discussion.
