The more something irritates them, the better it is.

What? Are you implying that atheism is a religion?
Yeah, I'll be over there not caring with Current. Every time I drive or ride by that grafitti near State College that says, "One way: Jesus," I don't turn it into a media circus.

Maybe a creche would be nice. One with Mary smoking a doobie, Joseph fucking one of the animals, the baby Jesus dead and fallen out of the manger with a vulture picking one of his eyeballs out, etc. All of these atheist billboards are so tame. If they want offensive - I can give them offensive.

I have to agree that it's kind of rude and pointless. Not going to convince anybody with a billboard. Just going to offend people, and feed the Christian persecution complex.
It's not even amusing.

Forgive me; I wasn't especially clear. The actual worship going on in most religions is incidental to the social function the houses of worship serve. They provide a weekly social outlet for people who are more likely than chance to share values and often engage in particular social events. That is, one moving to a new town might want to find a church or synagogue of their denomination to have a basic support network. Many atheist groups can provide the same things by having an atheist meetup group even if no worship occurs. Take the good religion offers and copy its effects without the superfluous myths involved.

American Atheists claims the billboard is aimed at "closet atheists," not Christians. I don't see any reason they'd have to ie about their intentions. Besides, people getting so butthurt about it implies insecurity. Maybe they really DO know that it's a myth?

Can I join you? I'll bring single malt whisky. Suits any attitude or lack thereof. That billboard does nothing for me, neither emotionally nor intellectually.

And if you disagree with me or get butthurt about that, then you really DO know that it's true. See how that logic works? Not very well. In any case, the sign is tacky, unfunny, and is something of a jab. In fact, it's enough of a jab to offend a christian even if she was liberal and spent more time with her atheist friends than at church. Though in the "Aw, that's not nice" sense rather than the "atheists are jerks!" sense. Now, Axial Tilt is the reason for the season... that's funny, non-tacky, and would only offend the fundies WITHOUT making a jab at them.

Jedi: You're in. But we might have to cancel because no one who's invited cares enough to come.
Zachski: I did not say anything about disagreeing. Fundies say that all of the time & I continue not to give a shit.

Besides, people getting so butthurt about it implies insecurity. Maybe they really DO know that it's a myth? I'm sure there are ways to appeal to closet atheists without (potentially) offending every single Christian, both liberal and fundy. The fundies are offended by anything remotely different from them, but even someone who is a super liberal christian believes in the Jesus. "Axial tilt is the reason for the season" is both clever and true no matter how one slices it (under the blue skies of the real world). "You know it's a myth" is just a metaphorical cockslapping.
