Kids strapping bombs to their chests or picking up AKs only know that kind of life, too. When cancer kids join al Qaeda, are you all "I'm glad he finally got to fulfill his lifelong dream of dropping buildings on thousands of innocent civilians?" [the preceeding was satire. If you can't figure that out with the current disclaimer, please leave this site and go join your fellow Teabaggers] I was under the impression satire was supposed include some humor. I don't happen to find your comparison of my cousin (who served in Afghanistan) and my best friend's fiance (whose wedding I shall be officiating this summer, while the boy is on some leave from the Navy - where he's a helicopter mechanic) to suicide bombers humorous. In the least. I'd theorize that you only called it satire to avoid flames, but I'm not quite that cynical yet. It is no different than a ten year old kid wanting to be a fireman, or a police officer. Kids live in a far simpler world than (thoughtful) adults - there are bad guys who hurt people, and good guys who stop them. The military? They're one branch of the good guys. The complexities of world politics, human nature, and the dark side of war don't occur to a ten year old. Even accounting for all of that, people who choose to serve and do so with honor deserve a measure of respect for it. Just like firefighters and cops. Undoubtedly, some of those folks are douchebags. Naturally. They're human after all. It is still not wrong for them to be held in a place of respect. Stop shitting on a cute story. If you want to criticize the American military, start a thread about it.

Lighten up, Amaranth. There are few ten-year-old boys who are not fascinated by the military.

Aww, poor kid. Though I have to say, though I disapprove of the military (and the tactics they use for recruitment), I'm OK with people wanting to join. One of my best friends is testing into the Coast Guard Academy next month. She genuinely believes in protecting the rights we enjoy in this country, and I don't have a problem with it.

I wanted to join the millitary, but I've always been to lazy. Why go to bootcamp when I can just cosplay as Hawkeye.

He was promptly deployed to Afghanistan... You're going to hell for posting this, and I'm going to hell for laughing at it. We should hang out where we get there. Deal ;D

The Avenger, the surgeon, or the native american tracker? Does it make me old that I only got the last two references? Not necessarily. It just means you don't read American comic books or religiously follow movie news. The character was created in the 60's.

Plus they get to drive and shoot tanks, blow stuff up, carry around freaking big guns. To a ten year old boy, that is pretty cool. / still thinks it's pretty cool. I was totally ready to go straight into rant at seeing the threat title. Oh, hilariously deceptive headlines! Still illegal, but nawwwww.

I tried to join the Air Force, but couldn't get in due to my being on ADD meds.
If I don't get into a 4-year college, I'll try to join the Army or National Guard.

The Avenger, the surgeon, or the native american tracker? Does it make me old that I only got the last two references? Maybe. But then I got all three and am only in my mid-twenties. Perhaps you're just a nerd like me, albeit not a very good one. (Com'on, man. Who doesn't know about The Avengers?! )
