For anyone who hasn't seen it yet, you can watch the debate here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsYjFhf7tloBased solely on debate tactics, without getting into the actual issues, Layton and Harper did the best. Harper's good at public speaking and presentation -- looking into the camera when he's talking, speaking slowly and calmly, etc. -- while Layton is talented at taking charge and putting the other side in the hot seat, although his barbs became a tad irritating as they piled up. Apparently I'm straight up NDP, once my abject non-opinions on Quebec and parliamentary reform are accounted for. My marker is literally right on top of the sign. About the only place the NDP and I disagree is on whether Canada should seek to strengthen economic ties with the US. I don't agree with their stance on that one either. Economic trade with the US is a major source of revenue for this country, and it benefits Americans as well. If we can strengthen those ties without compromising our values in other areas, I say go for it.

Hey, don't complain about being in a Liberal riding. You could be stuck in Stephen Harper's riding... like I am. I feel your pain. Jim Flaherty is my MP. Hand his wife is our MPP.

I just voted Liberal to keep the Conservatives out, this riding was very close last time. At least Joyce Murray is supposedly an environmentalist.

If the conservatives get in again it will be yesterday for quite a while.

I voted NDP - first time ever. Not that it matters - I live in Alberta so I'll be shocked if the same Conservative MP that was in place in my riding when I got up this morning isn't still there tomorrow morning.

Which part of Alberta are you in? I'm in Calgary. Edit: Apparently people in the Atlantic and eastern regions are sending results info to Americans to repost online, since they're not subject to the blackout laws. Sneaky. One thing I don't get: CBC Calgary and Global Calgary are completely blacked out right now ("Distant signals carrying election results from other electoral districts cannot be transmitted until the last polls are closed. Please tune to one of your local network channels."), which either means that their pre-results show is being blocked or they're carrying the signal from the eastern provinces for some reason. Either way, it's kind of silly. Edit 2: Is the blackout over for BC yet? I'm itching to post the results.

All right. Looks like a Conservative win, with the NDP as the official opposition. The panel on CBC is suggesting a Conservative majority (mostly due to fracturing in the left-wing), though it's still touch and go at this point. The liberals lost a TON of seats, NDP & Cons gained a ton, and the BQ is flailing. Duceppe is actually way behind the NDP in his riding.
Unsurprisingly, Harper got the seat in my riding. The Liberals finished last.
At this point, I'm just hoping that the Cons don't get a majority.

So if the conservatives get a majority, does that give them pretty much unfettered power, like a legislative supermajority + presidency in the US?

It'll definitely give them a hell of a lot more power.
A lot of people are projecting a tentative majority for the Cons. They're at 150-155 (keeps changing on the news) right now, and need 155 for a majority. However, there are a number of ridings where the difference comes down to less than 100 votes, so won't know for sure until all the votes are counted. NDP is somewhere between 99 and 105. The Liberals have around 30 (so much for being Canada's natural party, huh?) or less, and the BQ has four.
Scary thing is that the seats that still need to come in are in the west, AKA Conservative country. Hopefully the western half of BC will knock 'em back.

Canada has a parliamentary system with a weak head of state so yes. (They do not, however, have a parliamentary supremacy system as in the UK, as there is a constitution.)
