(double-post, but this just occurred to me) Actually, come to think of it, the early church was probably more like an abusive parent. I'll nurture and nourish you one minute and then threaten to kick you out and suffer you eternal damnation the next! This article ( God as Abuser) sums it up nicely, really.

I don't want...whoever it was...to think I'm ignoring the point about Rome & technology, I'm just not sure how to respond to it. Am I the only one here that wants to bum a ride on the TARDIS, go back, and stop this Christer bullshit before it even starts? (By which I mean assassinating Constantine AND the entire "council" of Nicea...) And this site keeps trying to convince me that it's members aren't insane anti-theists. Uh-huh. Oh yes. This shall be fun: 1. You ignore me, explaining to WMDKitty why she's wrong. Also other people. 2. Ironically, I AM an anti-theist. 3. Christianity=/=all of theism. Even if WMDKitty's views reflected all of the board, which they clearly do not, antichristian does not automatically equal antitheism. 4. You, oddly enough, did not tell us why WMDKitty is wrong. If this conversation was purely between you & Kitty, she would seem a lot more credible than you, because there is no one around to point out why her reasoning is false, & you did not give reasoning. But, yeah, you are kind of both using a lot of blanket statements. Just as one or 2 posts does not equal the entire thread, Christianity was not ruining everything with assholery for the ENTIRETY of its existence. It was a lot more pleasant when it was a fringe group, because that's how it tends to work.

Hey, it's not like I'm gonna actually DO it.
Just said it's a tempting proposition, if it'll save us all from the bullshit and anti-intellectualism that Christ-tardery has inflicted on humanity.

And let's not forget, the Council of Nicea was responsible for erasing a lot of religious information, too.

And let's not forget, the Council of Nicea was responsible for erasing a lot of religious information, too. Also it was the Christians who destroyed the Great Library of Alexandria to wipe out some embarrassing history. Fortunately, the Arabs managed to salvage many scrolls. As for the Goths, they were peaceful farmers fleeing from the murderous tribes from Asia. As a last resort they went to the Christianised Romans for help and were treated as slaves for the slaves - even worse in fact. After a while, some Goths became citizens even to the extent of being high-ranking officers. These then went to Rome to plead thier case with the Emporer and were told he wasn't home. So they stayed for 3 days causing little damage and no loss of life. It was actually the Christians who vandalised Rome, as there were still traces of Rome's pagan roots around as well as rival Christian sects to be annihilated to form "The One True Church". The resulting mayhem was them blamed upon the Goths, who are still branded as barbarians to this day. Christian Rome also sent 13 legions to Dacia and commited one of the most barbaric acts of genocide in history, then renamed the country to Romania ("for the Romans"). Reason - Romania still has thousands of tons of unmined gold. Sorry for the long post, but it had to be pointed out.

They were trying to destroy books on Paganism, because--*gasp!*--they were AGAINST PAGANISM. The other books were, more or less, collateral damage. The fact that the other scrolls would have been an invaluable resource to academia today doesn't mean that the Christians destroyed everything out of spite. The Christians? Vandalize Rome? You do realize that by the time Rome fell, a lot of high-ranking people were Christians? Especially after Constantine made it compulsory. The word "Pagan" comes from the fact that, after Constantine, only the country people and barbarians-- pagani in Latin--still worshiped the old pre-Christian gods. And if the Christians were the tribal Huns and the like, then why do we still use the Latin alphabet today? Answer: because Roman-educated clergy kept literacy alive (just barely) through the Dark Ages. This would not have happened if the Romans had not, by and large, converted to Christianity, nor would it have been the case if the Germanic or Gallic/Celtic tribes had been the majority of Christians at the time. Unless you wish to imply that the FUTHARK runes or Celtic writing just happened to evolve into an exact replica of the Latin alphabet within a couple centuries (which is awfully far-fetched), you have no argument here. I'm sorry, but I can't take this shit seriously. You do know who Justinian was? Constantine? How much do you honestly know about ancient Rome? Or Christianity? By the way, the reason the Arabs saved all that knowledge is because Constantine--named after that same Christian emperor--had copies of a lot of scrolls in the city of Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey). Even after the rest of the Roman Empire collapsed, Constantinople remained a powerful city for centuries. It was not invaded until the 11th century--by the Arabs--and when it was, the Arabs realized that there was a lot of useful knowledge (Euclid, Archimedes, Diophantus, Galen) in those scrolls and set about translating them. This is one reason why the Muslim/Arab world was so advanced during the Middle Ages--they drew on the knowledge of the ancient past and built upon it. And as you might expect, religious fundamentalism coupled with anti-intellectualism brought about the decline of the Muslim world later on. Religions are not bad. Religious extremism is.

And if the Christians were the tribal Huns and the like, then why do we still use the Latin alphabet today? Answer: because Roman-educated clergy kept literacy alive (just barely) through the Dark Ages. This does a bit of a disservice to the East Romans (who were, of course, Greek). Literacy was nearly universal among the upper classes. The Irish monasteries also did a good job, although they were indeed Roman Catholic. Not quite the case here. Byzantium was subject to numerous invasions by, among others, Bulgars, Goths, Russians, and Persians, well before the 11th century. As for the city itself, it wasn't breached by assailants until the thirteenth century, when it was in fact a crusade by Western Christians that pretty much wrecked the local shit. And in any case, even after Rome itself fell in 476, Byzantium ruled enormous amounts of territory, including Rome itself (after it was retaken in the early sixth century) and the Middle East until the mid-7th century. The thrust of your point is correct, though; indeed, one of the major factors in the Italian Renaissance is believed to be Byzantine ex-patriates fleeing the city after its final capture by the Turks in 1453, bringing ancient texts and knowledge west with them.

Which Jesus?
There was more than one.
One of the Jesuses could have been promoting what we call communism. Another "Jesus" was a Buddhist style philosopher who delivered the Beattitudes.
Before the Council of Nicea, there was Gnosticism. They believed that the "God of this world" had become corrupt, and that Jesus offered a way above this world. "God of this world" appears in most bibles, and most fundies equate that with Satan.
Arian Christianity teaches that Jesus was just another man, and didn't become the Christ until he passed the test, the three temptations from Satan. Also, in Arianism, "God" per se is unknowable, but knowable only through his son.
For two or three centuries, Christianity was incredibly disorganized, and they had trouble deciding which god from whom Jesus descended. One proposed father for the bastard messiah was Serapis. Serapis was a new-and-improved Zeus, but took the bed and throne of Osiris. It was the Council of Nicea that made Christianity into an Abrahamic religion.

We can't find any evidence that Pontius Pilate tried anyone named Jesus.
It could be that Jesus was crucified under Biggus Dickus.

"Insane kid?" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I can say with confidence that she's at least 20 years older than you. The irony of that coming from a 15 year old would be funny if it weren't so goddamn pathetic.
"Get raped and die?" If you knew even the slightest thing about the person you just said that to, I doubt you would have even entertained the thought of saying that.
I'm pretty sure that's a ban-able offense. Oh wait, you're still trying to "go out with a bang."
