So, fanfiction. It is what made me start writing regularly, what taught me how to write well, and gave me a better sex education (coupled with Wikipedia) than my school and my parents combined.
I think it's unfair that some books that are clearly fanfiction are not pointed out to be such (The Phantom of Manhatten, Eragon, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, I'm looking at you!), and go on to make tons of money doing things really good fanfic writers do every day.
However, 90% of it is crap and it's on questionable legal grounds.
So, your thoughts?

And Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is meant to be satire.

I'd also add Twilight to the list. Well, at least it reads like a bad piece of fanfic and it has all the major don'ts that shitty fanfic writers never learn to avoid.

I cut my writing teeth on fanfiction. I still write today. And almost every other day, I get another notification of a story alert regarding one of my stories.
It helps to have the ONLY crossover story between two given shows.

I'm a pre-reader for two fanfic groups, and I still write to this day. My first work was a fic, way back on my old Mac LC III. Couldn't write a text file bigger than 32K, or it'd never open again. Good times.

Seeing as I'm active on a play-by-post RPG forum I guess I could say I write fanfiction since most of the RPs are based off of a series. As for reading I only read this one which you should also read.

I'm generally afraid to read fan fiction that hasn't been reccomended to me by someone else.
I started writing FF for Heroes, a series that was well-recieved but is unlikely to EVER be finished. My two Back to the Future shorts weren't recieved at all, as far as I know.
I've always fancied myself as a writer, but while I was very good at characters (almost obsessively so), I was terrible at plot. Fanfic allows me to skip the part I already know how to do and work on what I don't know how to do.

I used to write fanfiction constantly. Now I prefer to jot down ideas for stories with my OCs. Also my first real fandom was StH, so add in some furry goodness there.
Thankfully, I never wrote sex scenes in my fanfics. *shudders, then wanders off to find some Orin fics*
*pops back in* Although I did write some motherfuckin' gory shit. Psychic premonitions of torturous deaths FTW. And yes, Knuckles was the first to die.

I wrote awful semi-grimdark Sonic fanfics once when I was like 10-13 or something. Chtulhu willing they will never see the light of day ever again.

smurfette, andi, I'm wondering why you're calling Eragon and Twilight fanfics. As far as I know, fanfics take place in/use characters from another work. Derivative? Yes(and that's not inherently bad). Fanfics? No.
Personally, I have two unfinished fanfics for OotS* and Dragon Age on my harddrive, the TES/Higurashi crossover over in DrKilljoy's fanfic contest thread, one for Sluggy Freelance, and one for the game Risen, written about 1 year before the game was released. Also several original stories.
*borderline non-consensual hatesex gender-bending necrophilia threesome torture porn. If finished and posted, and if the slashfic thread on the OotS-forum wouldn't have been locked on account of someone else's fic, it would have been locked on account of mine.

I don't know about Twilight, but Eragon is like the unholy crossover fanfic between Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. It's like, if I as a fanfic writer, were to say, "What would happen if I wrote Star Wars in the context of Middle Earth?"
Actually, you know what? I have done things like that. I'm currently writing a crossover fanfic where Quasimodo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame finds the lamp from Aladdin and falls in love with Belle from Beauty and the Beast. I deliberately include references to canon in there, and a lot of what happens to Quasi is what happens to Aladdin in the original. And yes, I have new stuff in there. There's a lot of cool character blending and mixing. But it's still fanfiction, and I never think it's going to be anything but fanfiction.
And Eragon is Luke. I could go on for pages about how he's Luke, and Brom is Obi Wan Kenobi, and Murtagh is Han Solo, etc., etc. It's not derivative (Twilight, I think, is largely derivative), it's all but lifted wholesale!
ETA: Too many italics.

My major fics are a Buffy the Vampire Slayer AU and the ONLY Battlestar Galactica/Stargate Universe crossover known to modern man.

D'oh. Forgot that my first ever fanfics were Mariofics. For some reason I wasn't able to find info on an official Mario storyline, so I started making my own shit up; the first was named, well, 'Mario', and it featured his and Peach's wedding; the second was 'Peach' and was incomplete, but it would've detailed the honeymoon kidnapping of Peach. The third was gonna be named 'Bowser', damned if I remember what it was gonna be about.
I was 8, cut me some slack. <.<; At least it never appeared on the internet.
...I really want to get an external floppy reader, I've got some Jimmy Neutron and StH fics from 2004-2007 stuck on some floppies. It'll be like opening a mini time capsule!

I suppose I should add Re-Take to the list of fanfics I've read bringing it up to a grand total of two.
Not exactly proud of that one because even for an Evangelion fanfic (a manga at that) it made no damn sense. Soundtrack was nice though.
