I have hated the idea of a bodily resurrection for some time now. The Xians promising me a new body in the afterlife sounds like a terrible idea. Our bodies are what get us into trouble. And if they can't feel pain or pleasure - what's the point anyway? If there is anything after death (and I suspect there isn't) I could at least tolerate it if I were to be transformed into pure energy. No streets paved with gold (which would be pretty, but pointless) no never-ending church services. Just pure energy as part of a larger energy source. Sounds kind of nice actually. No consciousness as such, so no boredom.

If some of these nay sayers actually came up to Canada and saw for themselves what our (imperfect, but still better than nothing) healthcare system is like, would they believe their own eyes? If they could go to a hospital and watch elderly people being cared for, premie babies being cared for, people with pre-existing conditions getting surgeries etc. that they need with no insurance company to get in the way or look into their application with a microscope looking for loopholes.
Would they believe then?
And, yes, I have a government issued health card. But I also have a government issued drivers licence and Social Insurance number. Big deal. I had cancer 5 years ago and I'm still here. That's more important to me and my family.

Most of these conservative anti-health care types are Christian aren't they? Why are they so hate-filled? Why are they so selfish and uncharitable to others less fortunate than themselves. Totally baffling. I'm Canadian and I totally don't understand the backlash against the health care bill. I challange any of their tea-baggers to actually leave their little homes and come up here and see how national health care really works. (fucking idiots)

That was amazing. I need a cigarette after listening to him. Gotta love Fry. Is there a video of the opposition's speech? He kept referring to what the other person said, but I didn't see a link. Also - what a pickle puss that woman beside the black bishop was. Who pissed in her cornflakes? oh, yes, Stephen Fry did. LOL

You don't seem to need my vote - but it goes to Andy anyway. What a loon.

I figure that I will return after death to whatever I was before birth. I don't believe in a soul, but I could be convinced that the life-spark continues somehow as a dot of energy. I know what I don't believe and/or want in an afterlife: - no physical body! that would suck. The Christian idea of a "glorified body" (whatever that is) appalls me. - no hell - no endless worshipping of whatever caused all this in the first place.
I remember reading a (Kurt Vonnegut?) short story about people who learned how to step out of their bodies and exist as pure spirits. They immediately realized that bodies were what caused all the problems here on Earth. We have to feed them, clothe them, stop them from treading on other bodies, etc. On stepping out of the body, their spirits immediately forgave everyone else, because they realized that people were just responding the impulses and needs of their own bodies. It seemed that, under those conditions, even the Unibomber could be forgiven.

Why would any gay couple want this bigot to photograph their ceremony? Time to make your money talk and find a nice non-judgmental photographer instead. And recommend him/her to your friends.

Wasn't he Keifer Sutherland's grandfather? He surely was. Father of Shirley Douglas, FIL to Donald Sutherland. And voted "Greatest Canadian" on a recent CBC special.

I'll just clear up a few things here: First of all it's Mrs. Youngie - so don't call me "CancerBoy". I'll take "CancerLadySupreme" thanks. Pierre Trudeau never spoke to me in grade school. I'm a bit older than that. But I did have the priviledge to hear Tommy Douglas speak when I was a kid. He was the true father of medicare here. Also he was a former Baptist minister. It amused him no end when Conservatives here would try to paint him as "Godless".
Anyway, I wonder what all the fundies are going to do when the world doesn't end just because they have health coverage? Probably just move on to some other doom and gloom prediction. Back to demonizing birth control?

Yeah, those are the stories. We, on the other hand, hear mostly the Michael Moore side of the US health care and I suspect the truth is just as distorted on both sides. I'll give you a truth though about the Canadian system. I had cancer 4 years ago. My only wait time was for the specialist, because I wanted to see the best guy and he was booked solid. Once I saw him things moved quite quickly. I had a scope booked, saw a surgeon and had my surgery within a month. I started chemo 6 or 7 weeks after that - which is the optimal timing. Out of pocket? nothing. Oh, sorry, I had to pay 15% of some of my prescriptions. The most expensive ones were all covered. So my out of pocket was under $100 for everything. So how is this a bad thing for Americans?

"PELOSI: Buy a $15,000 Policy or Go to Jail JCT Confirms Failure to Comply with Democrats’ Mandate Can Lead to 5 Years in Jail Friday, November 06, 2009
Today, Ranking Member of the House Ways and Means Committee Dave Camp (R-MI) released a letter from the non-partisan Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) confirming that the failure to comply with the individual mandate to buy health insurance contained in the Pelosi health care bill (H.R. 3962, as amended) could land people in jail. The JCT letter makes clear that Americans who do not maintain “acceptable health insurance coverage” and who choose not to pay the bill’s new individual mandate tax (generally 2.5% of income), are subject to numerous civil and criminal penalties, including criminal fines of up to $250,000 and imprisonment of up to five years.

This is where I saw the % , which actually here is 2.5%. Now bear in mind that his came from the Rapture Ready site, so who the hell knows. But they've all jumped on this $15,000 figure which can't be right, can it?
modified to add: Anecdotally, any of my friends who have visited the States lately have been questioned by the locals about our health system. They seem quite surprised that a) our taxes include all the health care costs b) we aren't murdering old people c) we can pick our doctors (within reason).

This Canadian is trying to puzzle out why there is so much objection to universal medicare in the States. The charming folks at Rapture Ready are just about tearing their hair out, but I can't really figure out what their problem is. One woman seems to be convinced that her disabled daughter will not get health care any more. Others seem to think it is going to cost them $15,000/year. Since the premium I read is 2.9%, your family income would have to be over 500,000 to pay that. What is the big deal? Can one of you explain it?
