If the only experience they had of Minecraft was in The Nether, then there would be the tiniest iota of understandability to their ridiculous claims.
This is just another case of "It's popular, it's fun: IT MUST BE OF TEH DEBIL!!!11"

I heard they were based on Shinto kami. That was what Jim Butcher went with when someone challenged him to write a good novel based on Pokemon, and he came up with the Codex Alera.

To Butcher's credit, Codex Alera was spawned when he said he could make a story out of any combination, and someone suggested both Pokemon and 300. Bam, Codex Alera less than 2 years later, and it sold/sells like crazy *hugs hir four books in the series*

There are a couple moments like that in Codex Alera, Ravy. Yes, I laughed too.
It IS an exceedingly good series, though. I highly suggest picking it up.

Six book series, and I've read my quartet of books... three times over by now? I've only had them since June, for that matter.

No, not 300. The Lost Roman Legion. Someone said that if you had a good story idea, it didn't matter if you were a good writer. He contended that if you wrote a good well enough, it didn't matter how bad the idea was. The guy challenged him to write such a book. Butcher asked for a terrible idea. In fact, two. Lost Roman Legion and Pokemon were the ones named. Source. Since this was before Dresden Files came out, this would have been when 300 was known at most as a critically acclaimed comic book miniseries, and probably wouldn't have been referenced as a "terrible idea."
