We've heard it all about Pokemon from these guys, but Minecraft? Well, they may have a point about it being distracting and addicting, but so what?

Because all that time you spent entertaining yourself could have been spent reading a bible or watching TBN.

Well... a few Pokemon are based on Japanese demons/spirits. Like Ninetales, Spiritomb, and a few others. Most are just fanciful takes on real-world animals, though. And their names, even the Japanese ones, are all just horrible puns based on what they are. I don't really think there's a demon named "fire lizard", for example, which is the exact translation of Charmander's Japanese name... And don't even get me started on "sparkle mouse"...
As for Minecraft, I could see that being demonic. But that's more just because I find it so incredibly boring it could suck out your soul.

My Japanese professor was telling us about how "pikachu" is the conglomeration of the Japanese sounds for electrical sparks, and the sounds that a mouse makes. Sound effects are demonic!

Well, "pika" is the word for like... sparkly. So it's not just a sound effect, though it can be used as such. Chu, however, is indeed meant to represent the sounds a mouse makes.

Being the ignorant little cultural amoeba that I am, I always thought that Pikachu was based on, well, an actual pika. (Even though they don't look a damn thing alike.) You have to be fairly shrewd to uncover the puns or meanings in Pokemon names, except in the most obvious of cases like Dragonair/Dragonite (duh, dragons) or Bulbasaur/Ivysaur. Otherwise they all seem like a lot of nonsense words.

Man, if they think random mish-mash names are demonic, I can't wait until they get their hands on the Elder Scrolls series. Especially Morrowind.
