The_L recently linked me to this website: We Are the 99%. In it, people share the troubles with their financial situation and a lot of the stories are simply gut-wrenching.

Couldn't you have just posted this in the other one of the other two threads about the same subject?

Possibly; if a mod wants to merge this with one of the others that is their right. But considering this isn't so much about Occupy Wall Street or the rich fucks sipping campaign on their balconies while watching the protests and far more about people sharing stories about how much in dire straights they're in, I felt it was worthy of it's own thread.

In a weird way, this reminds me of the sorryeveryone.com that went up after GW Bush got re-elected.

... I thought the style seemed familiar. Still doesn't make it any less painful to read and know that many of us here on the forums aren't the only ones going through hard times.

Let me just say, before I read that, I didn't realize just how fucking lucky I am to have parents in the 1%. I don't want to rely on them though, because taking their money for insurance (which I can't afford until after I pay my car off) makes me feel dirty.

Most of those stories make me feel like I'm in the upper 5%...which I know I'm not, but I still feel terrible about it. Here I was, worrying that I'd crumble under a mere $6k a year in school loans, 15 credit hours and 10 hours a week of work. *shame*

Your parents have an income of over $1 million? ...Damn.

Some people, many of whom also belong to the 99%, are mocking these people, often picking on minor spelling errors (ad hominem style) or mocking them for being "only 40k in debt" as if that was so easy to overcome.
I don't want to go on VeryDemotivational anymore...

I interpreted your question as rhetorical, but I'll still treat it as a direct question. How is it surprising? Not at all. But if you ever want to pay a visit to my angry planet, there's a vacancy at Honsou's old place. Here are a couple of serious answers: - Because I'm old enough to remember the proto-teabaggers of the late '90s. Ever read Unintended Consequences by John Ross? Same advocacy of violence, same self-righteousness, and every bit as reactionary as their modern counterparts.
- Because those who collaborate with the 1% aren't being hunted down in retaliation. They trace their beliefs to the Whiskey rebels and the Confederacy, two groups of traitors who abused the redemption they were granted. I fully expect these spoiled relics of the bad old days to turn to terrorism at the first sign that their privileges--not rights, privileges--are being revoked.

Now, rage, that's an acceptable reaction. A reaction I share.
