www.usatoday.com/money/industries/food/story/2011-09-05/More-restaurants-are-targeting-customers-who-use-food-stamps/50267864/1Nothing fancy in terms of linkage from me but how would you like to be on food stamps and be able to get a hot meal from say McDonalds? I know plenty of folks(including myself) who would love that option. And the Corporations want some of that sweet sweet money too so I guess everyone wins. Though...I am leery about how you go about doing this. I would say that limiting food stamp purchases to say the dollar menu or equivalent would stop people from blowing their entire month's supply of food stamps but I doubt corporations would want that. So what say you guys? Ironbite-also is the title clear enough for ya Nappy!? WELL!? IS IT BITCH!? I KEEL YOU TILL YOU'RE ALIVE!

While I do support this, this will just increase the lack of health among those dependent on welfare. And considering the food you can actually get with food stamps already is unhealthy...

Ya sure about that Zach? Cause me and the fiancee eat pretty dang healthy on the food stamps we get.
Ironbite-course a lot of that is due to her cooking but I have lost weight.

This wouldn't help America's Obesity rate.

As somebody who has been on food stamps, I don't like it, unless the recipient is unable to prepare food (such as by being homeless) or if the recipient lives in a food desert (other factors that limit ability for a recipient to buy or prepare food are also a good reason for an exception). Buying food from a store is a lot cheaper and of higher quality. And Ibs is right that you can be healthy while on a low income, it's just difficult and a lot of cheap food is very high in salt or sugar or fat.

Something else to consider: it might contribute to even more laziness (more convenient to spend food stamps on fast food than groceries). Also, you get more bang for your buck buying groceries over fast food (and I seriously need to learn and apply this lesson myself). I'm not sure if the net-effect would be worth it.

@ Qlockwork: Something I like doing is running the cost math for crafting a meal from things we got on sale... ground beef on sale for $1.77 a pound for any package over 5 pounds? hey, 6.66 pounds of burger for $11.78 isn't bad, and with our food saver, we can parcel that out in the freezer into 6 packages. Hamburger Helper's on sale for $1.50 a box? Grab 6, to account for the beef. One box is dinner for both roomie and I, so divide total cost by half. $1.64 each, and we're both fed for the night.
I use the same trick in extending meals, too. Pasta and rice is cheap, a buck for a box of the former, and around here, you can get a bulk 20 pound bag of rice for something like $12. Throw a little extra in a box of helper here and there, and there's even more to work with for not too much additional cost.
Try it sometime, you might be surprised.

Anyone notice that the graph on the left side appears to be two surveys combined into one? Unless they surveyed food-stamp users on their political preferences.

We used to do stuff like that but my siblings have gotten pretty picky.

If someone blows their entire month's budget on McDonalds...that's their fault.

Frankly, I think they should limit food stamps to healthy and nutritious food only, with maybe a 20% total allowance for junk-food. I understand personal responsibility, but I just don't understand why someone "needs" a Big Mac to supplement their diet.
Maybe I'm just cranky because most of the people up here spend their food stamps on snacky-cakes and soda. I just think that if you're going to ask for help in making ends meet, that it'd be appropriate to spend that help wisely.

You have no goddamn clue how they really spend their money and why. Not to mention that it's pretty damn hard to find food that is completely devoid of nutritional value. It's also not your goddamn money, it is money the gov't distributes and you don't get a greater say because you have a higher income.

I don't think they should be able to buy really expensive food, either. I have no problem with my taxes going to help people in need buy food, but I can't afford steak and shrimp, and neither can they.
