Here's what my coworker posted on facebook just the other day" Its almost a perfect blend of, "GET A JOB!" "Blame the president" and "I'm going to be on top one day so it doesn't matter that I don't know what I'm talking about now." I bet you didn't know that this whole thing was all about companies like Nokia and Nikon as well. No worries. That was new to me too. I got as far as "companies that made their digital cameras" before I stopped reading because I was rolling my eyes too hard. I already had an idea of what kind of ignorance I was about to see, didn't feel I needed to go any farther.

Isn't having a phone practically a necessity when looking for a job or working in many fields nowadays? There are some rather cheap ways to have one (at least in Poland), but it's hard to be accessible without it. And many cell phones can be used to browse Internet or check e-mail as well (even with those cheaper ones).
It's really hard to start a new business without any cash - most kinds require to get a room and some tools at least. Plus, you need many potential clients to have a chance it survives the first few years.
It's hard to not rely on others (at least on others being a potential client). In fact, it's impossible to actually be in ANY business without relating to other people. When people are themselves very poor, they won't buy your good unless it's a necessity. The access to rich people is very limited to most of the start-ups. Without clients, no business survives, and finding clients is hard without marketing and knowledge of the market (both require money to get).
And even if you have a good idea and your company starts having a profit, in a field with fierce competition you can go bankrupt very fast. Big percentage of new companies goes under during the first 5 years. Without a help, it's hard for the company to survive.
In short, telling very poor people to "GTFO and start a business" is hardly a reasonable advice.

I saw this youtube comment which claimed that the 1 percent don't want bailouts, and they don't need the government to support them, so we shouldn't tax them because they work hard, and that's the reason they have money.
Also, it said that the police were doing their job because the OWS were doing illegal things.

And as for 1% all working hard, I have one word: "rentiers". Plus, working hard has a different meaning when you don't have to do it to survive next month (which is the case with most of 1%).

Assuming that he isn't arguing that government debt somehow caused the economic meltdown in 2007/2008 (and, given that he's blaming Obama for the recession, it's likely that he does), there's an interesting point here.
Some people have argued that household debt, the actual cause of the crisis, is caused by people living 'outside their means'. This is not the case; this generation is the first in American history where the quality of living is worse than the generation before. What's changed is the means, not the living. People like Idiot Commentator have systematically paid people less for the same work*, which has led to (firstly) household debt and (secondly) a contraction of demand, leading (thirdly) to a reduction in production and employment and the bankrupcy of many of those companies. If you'd pay people more, it wouldn't be a problem.
But, of course, it's really the evil socialist Muslim who's spent too much on bunting and other government frivolous spending and if we only had a CEO for president, the country would be able to get a bailout from someone and it'd be back into a profit, just like Goldman Sacs.
*While stealing the profits for themselves, since they get to set their own wages.

There are some rather cheap ways to have one (at least in Poland), but it's hard to be accessible without it. There have been a few programs to provide homeless people with free cell phones, for this very reason. I saw this youtube comment which claimed that the 1 percent don't want bailouts, and they don't need the government to support them, so we shouldn't tax them because they work hard, and that's the reason they have money. Most of their wealth comes from Capital Gains (unearned income) anyway.

Most of their wealth comes from Capital Gains (unearned income) anyway. Indeed, that's the real difference between poor people and rich people. When you're poor, you work for your money.* When you're rich, your money works for you. *Notwithstanding, of course, those who are retired and/or too badly disabled to work.

I'm sure it also won't come as a shock that my coworker dropped out of high-school AND technical college, but not before utterly ruining his GPA for both.

Most of their wealth comes from Capital Gains (unearned income) anyway. Capital gains tax being a fixed 15% is why Warren Buffet pays a pittance in total taxes. His salary at Berkshire Hathaway is $100,000. That's a miniscule sum for a CEO, especially when the company he heads owns over a dozen other companies, among them GEICO. The thing that shits me is the claim that a raise in capital gains will harm tech start-ups. Because we all know that there was never a dot-com boom. A 20% capital gains tax makes that unpossible. (intentional)

... In short, telling very poor people to "GTFO and start a business" is hardly a reasonable advice. Gawds I just want to slap such people. I just happen to have my own business it's hardly a guarantee I will have enough to live on. Plus most business fail in the first year. And isn't part of the problem that there is no demand so no one his hiring? So where are these miraculous jobs supposed to come from? How can conservatives brag about how smart they are about the market and yet be so clueless about even the most basic aspects of economics?

She barely breaks even. Also, the OWS occupiers are all goddamn hipsters. So they're obviously stupid. /troll

Official Unemployment is over 9%, the real unemployment is even higher, you ignorant tool. "THEY WALK AROUND IN THIER LULU LEMON HOODIES AND USING IPHONES. THEY ARE PAYING INTO THE CORPORATIONS THEY HATE." They're against excessive corporate greed, not corporations, you tool. "50 YEARS AGO THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN TRYING TO STRETCH RATIONS BECAUSE WE WERE AT WAR." You mean war like we've been at for the last decade? Tibs, why is your dad such a damn tool?
