Parents who do not have their children fully immunised will be stripped of family tax benefits under a scheme announced by the Federal Government.
The Government says 11 per cent of five-year-olds are not immunised and has announced a shake-up of the system which will take effect from July 1 next year. www.abc.net.au/news/2011-11-25/immunise-or-lose-benefits-parents-told/3694236Good job, Australia, I think other countries should copy this or implement something similar.

As long as shots are government funded (as in, you can get an appointment and get one without having to pay, or at least having to pay too much) then I have no problem with this.
...flu shots like... barely covered by our insurance.

How many families are going to take the higher taxes so their kid's don't "get autism" (or is this just an American thing)

Zach, Australia has universal health care.
Lexi, don't care, the number will be lower than without this policy.

Ooh, the anti-vaxxers (can't we just call 'em anti-vaccinators? That way I wouldn't have to use a ridiculous double X) will be all over this one. I can see it now, conspiracy theories saying "The Australian government is blackmailing parents into making their kids autistic! WAKE UP AMERICA AUSTRALIA!"
This'll be fun to watch.

Coercing people into being healthy. A significant role for government is protecting everyone from the minority who are complete idiots.

I think it's unfortunate but it has to be done. I'm generally against making people do stuff that's against their beliefs, but vaccines are a public health safety measure. By not getting a shot, you're not only putting yourself at risk, but you're also putting at risk the people who are too old or too young to get shots, as well as the people with immune disorders. Also, Australia can actually pay for all the shots, so yay.

You can draw a distinction between reasonable opinions or personal preferences and factually false bullshit fraudsters tricked people into believing.
Does your right to believe and act on something that is factually untrue beat my right to be healthy? I'd say no.

I know Americans are very fond of individual rights and so am I but as far as I'm concerned your right to freedom of choice ends when your choices can seriously fuck other people up-that includes turning your littlies into incubators for future pandemics!

I think most non compliiant parents are lazy rather than "true believers", this policy may be the nudge they need.

I'm pretty sure I made it clear that I was in support of this new Australian law.

Just worried about other countries, such as the USA, adopting it WITHOUT universal health care. Shots are already required to enter public schools in many states, so we can easily use that system.
