source - news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/tennessee-family-home-burns-while-firefighters-watch-191241763.htmlThis doesn't seem right. Also hasn't this sort of thing happened before just in another state/city? Also makes you wish that if they want to be like this (note wishful thinking) that I could select only to pay the taxes I would benefit from. Example since I don't have kids, I could care less about paying the tax to the schools. But I would at least think it would be fair under the system of having to pay the fire fighters "insurance".

IIRC, this happened last year in Tennessee (maybe even the same county), but this is more evidence that the market isn't this panacea to all problems.

-holds head- Wow... and the fucking comments. Just last night I was complimenting Yahoo News! on the responses to the Bachmann "they have a right to get married to someone of the opposite sex" article because 95% of them were reasoned and sane. People on there support this! Where's the person with the internet murder spiders I can send to people who write painfully stupid things on the web. They're a bunch of sociopaths.

Yep, this isn’t even the first time this has happened.
Why is there even a “subscriber fee” for anyone, period? Why isn’t the funding for their fire departments taken out of regular taxes so this is a complete non-issue and everyone can have adequate fire coverage?
But, for Christ’s sake, if you just must run your fire departments this way, then the sensible thing to do is to let firefighters do their damn jobs, then bill “non-subscribers” for the service after the fact, and take them to court if they don’t pay. Doing it that way is still totally ridiculous, but at least it’s not completely insane.

She lives out in the country, the closest town is about 15 miles away (no joke) and there is no actual fire department where she lives. What they do have though is a volunteer firefighter group and they get funding from her electric company. Every month a $2.50 fee is tacked on to her bill that goes to the budget of the volunteer firefighters. Which imo would be a better solution than what they have or even billing them after helping.

As I said when something similar happened last year, this WRONG on so many levels. As Shykid said, if they're going to do this stupidity, they should've just put the damn fire out, and bill later. Plus letting a house burn to the ground, would be putting other buildings near by endanger.

Thus, $75/year subscriber fee in order to be covered by emergency services that are paid for (for some fucked up reason) by local taxes. (Don't agree with this, just explaining the why)

That’s how they do it here, but the bill is more like $5.00. Any way of automatically collecting the fee is better than this bizarre way of funding a fire department, but doing it this way and billing “non-subscribers” afterward at least isn’t as sociopathic as standing by and watching their home burn to smithereens. Instead, it’s just a really, really bad way of funding a public service. Fuck, I can’t believe anyone thought this was a good way of funding a public service. They live in an unincorporated area, so none of their taxes go to the local municipality. Thus, $75/year subscriber fee in order to be covered by emergency services that are paid for (for some fucked up reason) by local taxes. (Don't agree with this, just explaining the why) I figured it was something like that. This is why fire departments should be funded at least on a state level.

Thing is, I wouldn't blame the firefighters as much (although some of them are certainly bad apples). If they had helped, they likely would have been fired on the spot. The reason they had to stick around was just in case it happened to spread to one of their subscribers' residences.

So when do we get cops who only protect and serve the people who've paid a subscriber fee?

Because if you're gay, it's just as bad as burning someone's house down. Even some comments that are outraged by this story are full of stupid.
