By that logic, they should convert to every other religion and live in it for a while (spend a year as a Buddhist, a year as a Catholic, a year as a Muslim, a year as a Wiccan, etc.) because if they don't they have no basis for believing that their beverage of choice is better than anyone else's beverage of choice.

So tell me FSTDT, have you encountered any of these bizarre and twisted metaphors for why we should accept jebus as our lord and master? Straight from the FSTDT archive (paragraph breaks added): This is easily the worst and most offensive analogy I've ever encountered. God's concept of justice demands that somebody die for a crime -- anybody really, the killer, the victim, a random Joe on the street. More blood for the blood god! Let's not even get into the profound injustice that children deserve death because their parents misbehaved. -twitch- The worst thing is, most right-wing Christians scream for the blood of criminals and anti-cum when anyone who's done anything is released (aka forgiven).

I love ones like that, because often atheists are former theists of some sort that did try their brand of 'coffee' and found it to be shit More like they tried the coffee and thought it was either good or decent, but looked at its ingredients and were disgusted. And in response to the lengthy metaphor involving the judge killing a rape victim rather than the rapist, if the idea they're trying to convey is that criminals who are forgiven will repent because they were forgiven is severely flawed. It might happen in some cases, but first off a rapist would probably have a psychological problem of some sort (whether lasting or temporary), and second, it would me much safer to sentence the rapist to death or whatever other punishment the law required than to allow anybody else who is innocent to take the place of the rapist. They're pretty much saying that they'll kill an innocent person and just plain hope that the criminal wouldn't do anything else wrong. That needs extreme rethinking. This isn't the same thing, but I was reminded of it when I read this thread. I've seen the argument that to disbelieve in god one has to have conceived god and therefore they actually believe in god, but for some reason pretend they don't.

This I've gotten, but it's not really a "you can't comprehend metephor," so I didn't include it. As mentioned previously, there's a Chick tract to this effect. I also got one from iSong, back on RR. Thankfully, neither of them were this...extreme. Anyway, I responded to iSong with basically, "What the fuck? Since when is it acceptable to kill ANYONE because SOMEONE comitted a crime?" Although, considering the origin of the word "scapegoat," it doesn't surprise me that this twisted ideaology is used to defend an even more twisted ideaology.... Edit: In case anyone was wondering, I never got a reply to that PM.

Ask them what they think of gay sex. Straight from the FSTDT archive (paragraph breaks added): But then, it turned out that the rape victim wasn't really dead, but the judge (who incidentally was also the rape victim, and his own grandpa) said that was OK; the rapist, and all the other rapists could still go free, as long as the believed this crazy story.

A metaphor I heard for that was: "You can read about Paris and look at images of it, but you can only fully appreciate its beauty when you were there."
I countered with: "A good metaphor can justify anything."

Ask them what they think of gay sex. Or drinking hot liquid poo. After all, it may look gross, smell gross and even taste gross, but they'll never be able to comprehend the difference it can make in their life until they try it for a while.

I'm not sure if I should exalt you for the metaphor, or smite you for the image now stuck in my head! (+1)

I choose "exalt", because that's exactly what coffee looks, smells and tastes like to me.

Oh! Oh! Pick me!
I saw this metaphor on youtube. It's short and awesome.
Someone said something about people that WERE Christians but left and became atheists and the reply was this:
"They weren't real Christians. Once you've truly accepted Jesus that's it.
Once you go black you can't go back. Same principle."

Or, if you're participating in Quahog, Rhode Island's abstinence program, "Once you go black, you go deaf."
