Wow,
Through the whole thing, my husband was "there's people really like that?" with me responding "You've met my family, remember".
It never ran in the theatres here, I was actually surprised to see it at the video store. I think I'm going to watch it a few more times as I believe I didn't absorb it all.
Although I liked the priest outside the Vatican. If more priests were like him they wouldn't be in the trouble they are. Or people would quit going.

I do love that movie. I think my favorite part is when Bill Maher was interviewing Mohamed Junas Gaffar and his cell phone goes off, playing the Led Zepplin song "Kashmir." (And of course the subsequent "text messaging" between him and the person calling him.)

They had that at the red box here. I'd like to rent it, but my mother would probably hate it.

I'm going to borrow it from my brother. He tells me it's one of the best movies he's seen in a long time. I'm going over his place tomorrow, so I'll probably get it then.

This has renewed my interest in watching this movie.

Definitely an excellent movie. I don't agree with his thesis, personally, but he's right, religion is inherently funny once you remove the "respect" glasses.

I love this film and cannot recommend it enough.
Like Antichrist, I enjoyed the interview with the Catholic priest at the Vatican the most. He was unorthodox, humorous, and quite correct in his answers. I also really enjoyed the interview with the Vatican astronomer as well. That segment should be mandatory viewing for those fundies who believe that the Bible is, in any way, a book of science. (not like it would change their minds)
Two thumbs up and all that.

I've heard that it isn't--WHILE on that tired-out "101 Scientific Facts of the Bible" bullshit. I can't believe that's actually a book! I've refuted smarter Fundies on YouTube!

Yes the Vatican astronomer was amazing. Also the psychiatrist who explained the 'god hole' they're always going on about (it was equated to a mental illness in the movie)
We just got a new TV and I have the video for a week, so I'll probably watch it a few times over.
Oh, and I highly recommend Outlander. It's like 13th Warrior meets Alien.

I expected to like "Religulous", but I really didn't. Maybe I just wasn't relaxed enough, but to me it seemed like Bill Maher was picking on the religious because he knew it would stir up controversy, rather than trying to make any sort of point.

I thought he was just pointing out the ridiculousness of fundieism. Most people don't even think about how dangerous people like Ted Haggard can be.
Also, I think it was made as a response to "Expelled".

He's also right about the dangerous of fanaticism. Not sure I consider it a "documentary" as such, since it's largely Bill on his soapbox in one way or another....But it's interesting.

I saw Religulous in a tiny cinema in Cologne, Germany. While I liked most of it, and fully agree with the film, occasionally, the limits of respect, not for the religion but for the person, were overstepped. Like at the end of the meeting with this Ex-gay.
I did not see the English version, but the dubbed one, and it seemed occasionally be suffering from translation. Texts generally were visible for a too short time.

As I've said before, Religulous played a role in my switch to Atheism.
I found the interview in the Christian tchotchke store to be especially entertaining. That dude had some weak ass standards for miracles.
Oh, and the Kashmir ringtone... priceless. Especially as the huge Zeppelin fan I am.

I can't tell you how relieved I am to find someone else who didn't enjoy the movie at all. It makes me feel the same way that Michael Moore "documentaries" do. To me, it discredits any legit point it had at the beginning by using bastardly tactics throughout.
