There was also a recent study done that said 60 some percent of people in the UK didn't believe the original moon landings were real...so stupidity doesn't necessarily follow religion. people-press.org/commentary/?analysisid=118

Wow, only 39%? That is depressing. I was really hoping that it would at least be half who would accept the idea that life evolved into the species that exist today. I still find it hard to believe that people who accept evolution is that low. I just wonder what areas of the US the polls were conducted? Alabama? Kentucky?
Then again, I would like to see what the numbers would be for Canada before I go saying something stupid.

39% WTF? I'm at a loss for words. That includes people who but believe evolution but that it was guided by God.

You know, I was just having a conversation with a friend of mine yesterday about people and whether or not they are stupid. The example had to do with whether fingernails are dead skin cells. I did not know that people didn't know this stuff as a matter of course. I am amazed at the stupidity of my brethren, and it saddens me. I thought they were made of keratin, the same stuff a rhino's horns are made out of.

Keratin is a protein that hardens shit. It's found in things like fingernails, claws, etc, as well as hair. But fingernails are dead skin cells.

No wonder Obama wants Education reform as well. Also, not too impressed by the brits believing the moon landings weren't real, so yeah... I wonder what Portugal would be like with regards to retardation rates. Hopefully, not worse than Spain (those crazy spaniards).
Seriously, Darwin is too controversial? By Cthulhu, that's just fucking nuts. Also, I don't really trust polls that much anyway, so I wonder what the margin of error was for that particular poll.

Actually, yes, fingernails and hair are dead cells reinforced with keratin. Your skin also contains keratin to make it tougher and (almost) waterproof. Calluses are actually skin cells with increased levels of keratin to make it more resistent to damage.

Actually, this would be more a case of ignorance, IMO, not stupidity. I didn't know that fingernails were dead skin cells until you just pointed out. Not because I'm stupid mind you, but because it's not exactly anything I've really cared to know. Marc

174 years ago today, the Beagle dropped anchor at the Galapagos Islands. Not necessarily a seminal moment, but an important one nonetheless.

The pollsters were Gallup, so it would be a representative sample of a cross-section of America. Not just Alabama. Gallup's reliable like that.

Wow, I feel embarrassed for the USA. Tell me about it. At least you don't live here. When I go to Afganistan can I just walk over to a British base and defect...is that how it works?

I did not know that people didn't know this stuff as a matter of course. I am amazed at the stupidity of my brethren, and it saddens me. More than that, the outer layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, is largely made out of dead cells. Which is now why I have decided to declare that LadyRenae has a face of death.
