"If you took a class in Women's Studies, you likely heard that Christianity is a patriarchal religion designed to oppress any woman fool enough to join it."
Actually, this is particularly interesting, because, if you'll note, the book is about atheism being linked to bad FATHERS. Because God is a FATHER figure, or so the book argues. The mother isn't even mentioned unless she's being beaten by the father. So, apparently, the maternal figure has absolutely no consequence whatsoever, and can leave the family or die all she wants--just so long as that kid maintains a good relationship with dear ol' dad, they'll come out an outstanding theist.

I am personally offended by this concept. My dad is awesome. And a theist. And one of the most kind, gentle, forgiving, intelligent, involved, admirable people I know. Fuck you for suggesting otherwise, Anne Morse. Just because your daddy didn't love you, doesn't mean you get to attack mine.

Funny how all of this shit happens in college and nobody ever just questions their faith on their own when they're younger. "Oh noes, teh atheeists are grouping up in those evil colleges and just attaking us!" Seriously, to these people challenging, even questioning, their faith makes you a villain. 1. What the fuck? Citation needed. 2 If there were less openly atheist people it's probably because there was less tolerance and less freedom for them to express their ideas. "You know, all of the famous atheists like Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot and all those other serial killer guys. We all know that Carl Sagan and Douglas Adams and such weren't really atheists!" ...Holy shit, they actually DID go there! XD Citation. Fucking. Needed. *sigh* But this is nothing new. Look at one of my Atheist Nexus posts: You're just an atheist because mommy and daddy never hugged you!!!This guy on Facebook told me that I was an atheist because I had a bad childhood, and said that this was also why I don't like the idea of marriages in which the wife is subject to the husband.

Ya know, I'm getting so freaking TIRED of all these Fundie idiots claiming that Hitler was an Atheist. There is so much saying OTHERWISE, the fuckers must seriously have their head in the sand or something.

Well, no TRUE™ Scotsman Christian would do bad things, so Hitler must have been an atheist.

I'm so sorry you got that crap, Lazy. My brother, who is also atheist, gets that, too. Our father died when he was only a month old. Also, my wife is estranged from her father, so you know how some of my relatives explained her atheism. However, my maternal grandfather was pretty horrible as a father, and all his children grew up to be Christian. I have the same dead father my brother does, and I was seven when he died, and I'm Pagan. My atheist SIL has a really wonderful relationship with her atheist father. So I'd say they should try again. (And unfortunately for you atheists, you know they will.) www.boundless.org/2000/departments/isms/a0000223.htmlPersonally, I think it's bullshit. I get along very well with my dad, which is a lot more than most people my age can say. Also, the article makes the mistake of mentioning Hitler as an atheist, which I think we all know he wasn't. I guess the thing that irks me the most about this is that some of my mom's fundie friends who know I'm an atheist have asked my mother, "Do Lazy and her dad get along well?" Uh, yeah, actually, we do. And they are quite rude for insinuating that we don't. One of them actually mentioned Faith of the Fatherless as basis for suggesting that my dad and I go to counseling to "straighten our issues out. Maybe it will help Lazy come back to Christ!" (more or less a direct quote) If these idiots would focus for a minute, they'd realize that there's no problem between me and my father. I just wish that these ignorant idiots would stop publishing stuff like this that's a boldfaced lie. Not all atheists have abusive/missing/distant/etc dads.

Perhaps a century ago, a psychodynamic explanation for atheism would have been acceptable and worthy of academic criticism, but now we know better: cherry-picking twelve famous cases and then generalising to a group with millions of members is intenable under modern-day sociological standards.
I notice that all the people on the list have awful hair. Does that mean that there is a correlation between bad hair and an absent father?

I had a horrible relationship with my dad, especially when I was in high school. Of course, I was the ultra-fundy xtian (most people in my class knew me only as "the preacher"), and he was, what I would consider, a 'xtian agnostic'. He believed, but only because it was convenient for him to do so. But I think that having a good or bad relationship with one's parents doesn't have to be about religion. I think that an atheist child and a xtian parent can get along just fine. It's the fundy xtians that have a problem with it. Most xtians aren't so fucking crazy that they would disown their children just for not agreeing with them about some magical sky fairy. Or at least, I hope that's the case. Otherwise, we're in some real shit.

Fundies dig out the "Bad Relationship With Their Dad" canard whenever they get really hard up. It's right up there with "They really believe in God but they're mad at him," and "They all suffered a deep emotional scar when they young." It just mouth-sounds, which is about all they're good for anyway.

Turns out that having a lousy relationship with your dad doesn't cause atheism, just a future where you become influential. Honestly, if every individual studied was also world-changing, that suggests exceptionalism. Exceptional individuals make terrible subjects to use in generalizations, because THEY AREN'T GENERAL.
It's almost as though people with an axe to grind make for lousy scientists.... Ironically, some studies suggest a correlation between the extent of one's religious sentiment and one's neuroses. People who are primed to think of death or their mortality are more bigoted, more nationalistic, and more religiously-motivated than those who are not. Check out Terror Management Theory.

My maternal grandfather lied about his age to join the army in WWII in order to get away from his father. His father was a seventh day advantist minister.

Isn't this whole thing just another variation of the "atheists are just rebellious" myth? I mean, FSM forbid we actually be guided by evidence. It's all really to spite god.
