It'd be ironic if he got introduced to some prison loving and picked up something uncurable in the process.
Wouldn't look like such a smart plan then, would it?

l2sarcasm.
Also, I doubt fines would have been any more a deterrent in this case. Being broke and desperate makes fines pretty irrelevant.

And what happens if the criminal in question refuses to pay or can't pay the fine? To the jail you go.

I went to my local health centre at 9:30 this morning. I made an appointment for immunisations against 7 diseases across 4 injections. I got an appointment for 5:30 this evening. All but one of the immunisations I got free at point of service, the other being rabies which isn't a problem in this country. I love the NHS Just out of curiosity, how much would my experience have differed in the States?

Well, depends on what the shots are for. If you're poor, but not quite poor enough for Medicaid/Medicare, you can get some shots, like for the flu, for free at the public health clinic. I had to pay ~$100 for a meningitis immunization, though.

the other being rabies which isn't a problem in this country. Isn't that a bit like buying snake replant in Ireland?

Which is your dominant hand, you'd end up only having it at your disposal. You'd get to keep both legs, though!

You might have also had to schedule an appointment for it, which could easily mean waiting 2-3 weeks from initially walking in to getting them.

Is rabies actually prevalent enough there to warrant preventative medicine rather than just treating cases as they happen? Our standard regimen of free shots was the MMR -- measles, mumps, and rubella. Tetanus is a free-be, if not standard, and I think they may have also added chicken pox and HPV. And of course there are free flu shots for everyone, not just high risk groups.
