Excellent news all round.... I was watching Maddow the moment this was passed.
However, one of my FB friends had this as their status: "Im not sure which was more exciting tonite, NY passin the Gay marriage law, or my cat passin gas." *giant explosive sigh*

If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate. Beautiful. So here's a question: Canada's population is 33 million (or that's what we're telling you). How close is the States now to having the same number of people with the right to gay marriage in their own state? new york has that many.

How close is the States now to having the same number of people with the right to gay marriage in their own state? new york has that many. According to the 2010 census, the NY population is just shy of 20 million. Iowa has another 3. Connecticut has 3.5 million. Vermont and New Hampshire combined are another 2. Massachusetts is 6.5. DC is 600,000. Altogether, that's 35.6 million people here in the US that have real marriage equality, unless I've missed a state. There are more who have something similar, like civil unions. If California gets its act together, that'll add another 37 million.

MaybeNever, I loathe to correct you, but the equality is not yet real or comparable to the Canadian one since there is no federal recognition.

Iowa: 3.0 million New York: 19.4 million Connecticut: 3.6 million DC: 0.6 million Massachusetts: 6.6 million New Hampshire: 1.3 million Vermont: 0.6 million Total: 35.1 million ETA: All my numbers are from the state's page on wikipedia.
