If so, you might want to get a fresh pair of walkin' shoes ready if you ever plan to go out drinking. Turns out, using a Designated Driver won't suffice in Indiana any longer. Unlike the seat belt law recently discussed, I fully support Driving While Impaired being a crime (that steel chariot won't put just the driver at risk when s/he's sloshed and/or stoned); however, I also fully agree with the sentiments in the below linked article. Using a Designated Driver is exactly what those who choose to drink in a place from where they can't and/or won't walk home should be doing. (Fortunately for me, there's a nice bar-and-grill establishment less than two blocks away from my apartment, so when I want to get drunk, I need never worry about how to get home. It serves good food, too.)

I'm hoping they're only arresting passengers for doing stupid stuff like hanging out the car window, and not for just being drunk.

How would walking shoes help? Then they just bust you for public intox. <sigh> The cops have been doing that at the one decent bar in town, and no you don't have to do anything stupid.

So, what, are you supposed to just teleport from the bar/party/whatever back home? How ridiculous. Unlike the seat belt law recently discussed, I fully support Driving While Impaired being a crime (that steel chariot won't put just the driver at risk when s/he's sloshed and/or stoned) Again, not wearing a seatbelt doesn't just put you at risk -- it can turn your body into a projectile, which can harm people in or around the vehicle. Additional, people injured by not wearing seatbelts take up medical resources that could have been used to treat someone with an injury/illness that is less/non-preventable. Plus there's the whole weighing out consequences thing that was mentioned in the other thread.

I wonder if they would also punish someone who is high in the passenger seat. Which could cause a LOT of shit (think: medical procedures and needing a drive home)

To be fair, it's a new thread, so reasserting the same thing half a dozen people took him to task for in the prior thread as true is totally valid again.

If there were a taxi driver's lobby in Indiana, I would be getting very suspicious right about now.

If there were a taxi driver's lobby in Indiana, I would be getting very suspicious right about now. I wouldn't. Drunks are horrible tippers and you have to hose the vomit out of your cab at the end of your shift.

There's nothing to worry about, Rat is just being alarmist. You can get charged with public intoxication if you're riding in a car. The only way someone is going to get that is by being an unruly drunk. Using a desginated driver is enough, unless you plan on acting like an ass.

This thread keeps making me think of the Alarm:

Why is it that my state only makes it into the news when something stupid happens?

I can kind of understand the sentiment. Someone drunk or high in the passenger seat can become violent and unruly and affect the ability of the driver. However, I would rather see this as a case by case basis, which is probably the most likely. I doubt police would just pull over a car with a drunk passenger and arrest them for being drunk in public unless the car is acting strangely to begin with.
