And once again, we are reminded why Sandman is awesome as fuck.

If you ask me, Patton is far more awesome than Jefferson and friends could ever hope to be. If anyone should be America's cultural icon, it's him.

I was always partial to the Roosevelts myself. FDR and Teddy are simple legendary in reality.

As someone who is currently in high school, this saddens and infuriates me. Most of my peers are already stupid enough for my taste.

This is also why you get so many weirdly bizarre stories about the Founding Fathers. From Washington throwing silver dollars across rivers and Jefferson straightening horseshoes with his bare hands to Lincoln writing the Gettysburg Address on the back on an envelope on the train to Pennsylvania. It's the deliberate construction of a mythology. Don't forget George Washington chopping down a cherry tree and then admitting to it with perfect honesty. Funnily enough, I couldn't remember if it was George Washington or Abraham Lincoln due to the "Honest Abe" meme, so I googled it. Google auto-completes for Abraham Lincoln Cherry Tree Story. So, apparently, I'm far from the only one to get confused on this apocryphal story.

It's funny in that people try to make these apocryphal stories true. The property in Virginia that housed Washington's childhood home had cherry trees planted on it because of the tale of Washington and the cherry tree.

As someone on the outside looking in, can I just say (again) how weird the sanctification and cannonisation of the US "Founding Fathers" looks to everyone else? It's odd, but totally understandable. The USA is in the fairly unique position of being a (historically speaking) very recently created entity, Nope, the US political system is the oldest on Earth, not youngest. The actual national entity is older than virtually all European, African or Asian nations. For example, Germany is scarcely two decades old, ten times younger than the US. Nor does Australia. Why have we no perfect heroes?

And you don't consider Yahoo Serious and Paul Hogan to be perfect heroes? Joking aside, I've never been to Ozzie, but wasn't there, at least for a long time, still a close cultural tie with GB? Did Australia break with GB in a similar armed rebellion like the USA? I am actually asking, Australian history is one area I am very sketchy in.

Nothing of the sort actually, we just decided in 1901 that nominal independence would be nice, there was a referendum and that was it. Then again I guess it's likely Australian culture has progressed to the point where nobody here identifies with any British cultural heroes so Aussies are trying to find their own with fuck all success. It would certainly explain why the unmitigated disaster that was the Gallipoli Campaign seems to be so legendary over here.

Why have we no perfect heroes? Fred, you're blithering again. First of all, the Germans don't consider their country only 20 years old. But that aside, there are many, many countries that have an unbroken existance far longer than the USA. Off the top of my head, and in no particular order... Denmark, UK, Iceland, Japan, Spain, Portugal, France, Poland, Norway, Switzerland, just to name a few. However, if your point is that there are other countries of similar age to the USA who don't have the wierd cult deification of a select group of national heros, I tend to agree with you.
