So, here's the deal. I've decided I'm going to audition for a job as a musician on a cruise ship. I've been researching this for a couple of months now, and I've decided I really want to go for it. I went on a cruise once in college; it was one of our band trips. We performed twice on the ship, and it was the most fun trip ever. I won't be able to audition for another year or so though; I have a lot of stuff I need to do first. I have to finish getting my teeth fixed up. I have to practice and record some stuff for a demo; I have to create a web site and have a professional portrait done. Fortunately I have the connections to get all of that stuff done. First what I'm working on is music though. Right now I'm working my way through the Real Book Vol. I and Vol. II. So far I am up to page 216 in Volume I. I also need to learn clarinet, because saxophone players must double on flute and clarinet. Can't afford lessons, so I'm going to teach myself. I mean I know HOW to play it, I just don't have the fingerings all down, and it's different from flute and saxophone fingerings, which are mostly similar. And then I have to figure out what to do with my apartment and stuff. And bringing six months' worth of insulin and test strips along. But I'll worry about that later. I've been here almost three years; I love doing musical theatre and band, but everything keeps getting cut back and I just feel like I'm working my ass off and not getting anywhere. I can't find people to form a jazz ensemble with. I'm sick and tired of the winters. So this is what I've arrived at. Get paid to travel the world and play music; fuck yeah, I'm all over that!

Good luck! (Hm, why does that always look so sarcastic in text? Just so there aren't any misunderstandings, I really did mean to wish you good luck I have a couple of friends who have been/are working on cruise ships. It's not a life that is for everyone, but the people who do enjoy it usually really love it. And since it seems like it is something you really want to do, so I'm sure you'll have a great time. So I hope your master plan works out as you've planned. It's always great to have a plan.

This looks doable to me. You seem to have thought it out very well, and have a realistic timetable for accomplishing it. Good luck!

And bringing six months' worth of insulin and test strips along. Couldn't you use an online pharmacy and have the stuff shipped to you? I know you are at sea, but you'd be coming back to your home port every once in a while. I can't see why the stuff couldn't be mailed. I know of a few FtM's who have their testosterone mailed to them. (T is a controlled substance since it is technically anabolic steroids.) If that can be mailed, insulin and test strips could be.

I'm not sure. The insurance I have is only good in Minnesota; anything outside the state needs their approval. And as far as I know all the ships give you medical benefits, but I'm not sure how it all works with diabetes. Right now I'm assuming I would get my doctor's permission and MinnesotaCare for six months' or whatever worth and it would be stored in the ship's medical refrigerator, or something. But like I said, it's way too early to worry about that right now.

Best of luck to you, especially if it gets you out of your bakery job (I will then so envy you.).

Good luck, Aqualung! When you get all your music worked out, why don't you post some YouTube vids? We'd all love to see you perform!

Sure sounds like a winner, Aqualung. Why didn't I think of that when I was young? Oh, yeah. I didn't know how to play an instrument.

The only one I really have so far is my solo with the band, which I posted. I'm not exactly sure how you go about recording a video for auditions either. Go to a studio? Do it in your living room? Hmmm.

This sounds awesome. I'm not a travelling kind of guy, but it still sounds awesome. Good luck on making this happen!

Okey
Travel and work is a bitch
They'll be days you will weep cos you want to be home
You will miss birthdays and holidays
Life goes on without you, when you travel things get put on "hold".
It's hard to make friends when you travel so much. That or you end up living in bubble of just you and your travel/work mates.
It's really hard on relationships.
In the past three years I've lived out of a suitcase for a total of TEN months. It is not easy.
Staying in contact with friends is really hard. Even with the internet, we work hard and there are time zones and strange working hours to contend with.
I really miss my muso friend, he's been on tour for so long. For about 8 months with a short break for the holidays. I don't know how he does it.
oh yes I do. He chucks the occasional wobbly, swears at people (but never at the audience) and drinks a bit. lol

It's really hard on relationships. What are those?? My social life pretty much consists of band and internet anyway. ;D

The idea of a cruise ship terrifies me.
But the idea of travelling around playing music sounds very neat, I hope your plan works, it sounds like you are well excited about it. There are worse fates than being on the open sea I suppose. Picking up other instruments is probably very good experience as well. Best of luck!
