...Mommy...The dark lady's talking to me! I kid, of course. In my youth, I was dark enough to get called a spic and other such terms. Then I got migraines, stopped approaching sunlight because my head would implode, and got consistantly fairer. I could probably MAKE myself tan that dark, but it's not worth the BS. Yeah, I definitely notice an increase in the "Where are you from?" comments in the summer.

Unfortunate but unsurprising. One can only speculate (unless someone has statistics) how often this has happened in the last ten years.
Also, I remember coming back from Borneo last December with some friends. Yours truly was the only person who had his bag X-rayed.

I don't tan easily, and I look white, so I've never had issues.
The thing is, I don't self-identify as white. Part of it is a backlash against white supremacism. I prefer to identify by ethnic group, in which case I am Semitic.

When I was a child, I used to mark the American Indian option on state test. In middle school I had to come to the realization that I didn't have enough Indian blood in me to consider myself one.

Also, I remember coming back from Borneo last December with some friends. Yours truly was the only person who had his bag X-rayed. When I crossed the border into Washington a number of years back, the only person out of all of us (there were a bunch of us in different cars) who got any scrutiny was a girl who's from Pakistan -- she's very dark, so there's no mistaking her ethnicity. It wasn't even because she's a permanent resident, rather than a citizen, as we also had a chick from South Africa (white) and a Russian dude (also white), both of whom have the same status as her and have been in Canada for a shorter period than she has, yet they didn't pull either of them out of the car. It was only 20-30 minutes of questioning and verification, but it pissed everyone off. It wasn't the first time something like this has happened to her, either. She's so used to it that she had a very "meh" reaction to the whole thing, while everyone else was bitching about it. I'm glad that she doesn't let it get to her, but it's really fucked up that it's gotten to the point where she's used to this shit. I don't really identify as anything other than Canadian. It's too confusing when I've got such a mixed bloodline. That said, when you've got any Semitic blood in you (which I do), and you constantly hear racist assholes insisting that you can never be "truly" Caucasian if you have Jewish ancestors (as if it somehow taints you), it gets to the point where you're like, "Well, fine then -- fuck you. I don't want to be part of the same group as you, anyway." Yeah, I don't have enough to identify as Native, much less get status. My maternal grandfather is something like 1/4 Native, give or take, and he identifies mostly with the French part of his ancestry.

I would hate to get to the point where I get jaded to this sort of behaviour. Though I have to say, I haven't really experienced much overt racism, how much covert racism I have suffered I cannot say. However, I was quite amused at being searched, I hoped I would get on Border Security (they were filming at the airport). In regards to nationalism and the so, I am quite anti-nationalist and anti-patriotic. As Eugene Debs said:"I have no country to fight for; my country is the earth; I am a citizen of the world."

White Italian here. Used to be that when I tanned, people would treat me like dirt. Because I was clearly an illegal from Mexico to take their jobs.
Here in South Florida, I don't get that shit. Partly because people are less prejudiced here, partly because so many people tan, and partly because if you say that shit to a Cuban, zie is NOT going to just sit there and take it.

I'm pale white, so I don't think I'd ever be mistaken for a minority, unless I happened to wear one of my two pink shirts.
Now, being mistaken for a vampire on the other hand...

I'm not pure Caucasian (got a bit of First Nations in me) but I'm light skinned enough not to have to deal with shit like this, for which I'm glad, and then I get mad because I shouldn't have to be glad to be white in this day and age, this is the 21st century for fucks sake!

Possibly. I also underestimated the staying power of Twitter.
