By allowing women to serve in the military and in combat roles you increase your potential recruit pool. When you have a bigger recruit pool and still select the best / weed out unqualified logically this will give you a better army.
Likewise if the military does not have enough "good" recruits but still need the same amount of troops, they have to lower their standards to fill the quotas (look at the gangs in US military.)

Actually, I believe I read somewhere that mixed gender units actually perform better than their...stratified counterparts. Nothin motivates a man to survive and kill anyone shooting at his unit than an attractive woman with a gun right next to him.
