Rule of thumb is to take the tax and double it (it means add it to itself, Lithp. Your flip phone has a calculator). If the service is really good, add a bit to that amount.

Standard tip, as I understand it from waitress friends is as follows:
10 % for shit service 15-18 % for adequate 20+ % for outstanding service.
For reference? I stopped in at a little sandwich shop in Philly's airport. I hadn't had a damn thing to eat in 18 hours, save the measly efforts on the planes I'd been taking. Best club I'd had in years. The meal was $8.56, and I left a $5 tip to boot.

I typically leave between $5 and $8 for a $25 meal, sometimes more if I can't be arsed to break a bill. I'm not rich by even the most generous estimation, but I've done service jobs and they blow enough ass that the service has to be really shitty before I go cheapskate on them.

We generally aim for 20% anyways, 15% if the service wasn't that great. We try not to go lower than that :V

From my admittedly limited understanding of the business, as I understand shitty wages plus tips should equal out to somewhere in the realm of $230 a week, if you're lucky.

In Colorado I think it's $4/hr, meaning that even with 20% tips they don't make any sort of money. Proper tipping has increased to at least 25% for any level of service. Here in Washington, meanwhile, servers make like $8.50 or $8.75 per hour, so tips can actually serve their theoretical function of rewarding hard work. My brother's an assistant GM at a restaurant and I've helped him with the bookkeeping once or twice, and some of his servers make better than twenty dollars an hour.

The meal was $8.56, and I left a $5 tip to boot. 10% for good service was standard when I was a kid (this was from etiquette folks, like Miss Manners...waitstaff will always inflate it). 15% was standard for good service when I was a late teen and early 20's. The 20% standard has only been that way for the last 7-10 years. Reality is that the laws regarding wait staff need to be changed. The fact that they can be paid less than 1/2 of minimum wage because they may or may not get tips is ludicrous. They are also taxed up front now on theoretical tips (as I understand it), whereas they used to only be taxed on what was in their pay envelopes and whatever they actually reported (so it was standard to only report 15-20% of actual tips earned).
